I am looking for information on Harbin Russians, including where records might be, the schools, universities, any other surviving buildings, cemeteries, etc., in Harbin. Does anyone have any info that might help me?

Hi,

There is a web page by Harbin City government on the history of Harbin and all its foreign migrants and settlers. Unfortunately it is all in Chinese text. If you can read or can get someone to translate, it should be interesting to you.

http://dqw.harbin.gov.cn/hrbren_3.htm.

Regards.

Or, use Google Translate: http://translate.google.com
Probably not very good, but free, and better than nothing!

Travel Tips for Harbin

Haggling

by Crowe

The chinese are tough business people. And if they see you are a westerner you stand no chance (no body's got a chance anyway in the dept stores).

I found the best thing is if you have a chinese person with you get the to haggle (discount), hide round the corner and appear when the deal has been struck.

Sounds abit pink panther but trust me I saved about 3000reminbi/£200 with this approach

Ice-Snow World

by THLIN

Five minute driving from Sun island, there you can see many ice carvings. All of the ice material is from SongHua Jiang which is mother river of the city.
Night time view is better than day time due to the lights that sparkle the exhibition, but the temperature is much lower than day time. To some extent, it's really a torture.

Zhongyang Dajie, The Greatest Street in Harbin

by calcaf38

Ever since the Old Harbin days, Zhongyang Dajie has been THE street to see and be seen.

Even during the days of the Cultural Revolution, my friends tell me Zhongyang Dajie remained lively and bustling.

Today it is pedestrian, and carefully restored. There are many Western luxury stores, but the flavor of the street is not too diluted.

Harbin is a great place to go!! It gets cold there

by mrtrainer

Harbin is Chinas northern city. Four Saesons. Very cold to mild summers. Long growing seasons for the corn and wheat fields. Harbin area has a lot to offer. I took trains and Planes!! Taxies also helped. I made friend with taxie drivers at every place I went in China. Just pay their salary they need and the rent they pay to the taxie company. Throw a little extra for the wife and Kids and you have a great safe tour guide. It worked for me. I had a couple of taxie guys. I let their wife and kids come on Long had Lunch and dinner and it all went real smooth!!

Harbin, the Ice Festival

by Darby2

I've never been to Harbin but I built this page because Harbin is the twin city of Edmonton. They have similar climates and each holds a winter festival. But Harbin's festival makes ours in Edmonton pale by compairison.

These photos were supplied to me by my friend Wolfgang.

Contestants come from around the world to compete in the snow carving contest. Each is given a block of snow 3 meters on a side...then the carving begins.
