I would like to know if Taxis are the best way to tour around Harbin or a private guide in January 2011. How far is the Harbin Airport from the centre of the city. Thanks

You will hardly be able to speak with the taxi driver, unless you speak Chinese. A tour guide will be much more expensive, but I don't see any other option if you really want a tour, and want to see places to far to walk to from city centre.

Hmm, why would you really need a guide?
Taxi drivers mostly do not speak any English at a workable level.
Have a look at my VirtualTourist Harbin travel page for more tips and photos: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/1d57/f8323/

Travel Tips for Harbin

Song about Sun Island

by ellyse

Not many people know that there's a model of a piano on Sun Island.
Even less people know that there's actually a song written about Sun Island called "Tai Yang Dao Shang" (On Sun Island), sung by Zheng Xulan -- the same singer who's famous for singing the songs of the drama serial based on Dream of the Red Chamber/Mansions.

Tiger Farm

by BobandHua

They have a Tigers only Zoo here. It is a drive thru type (Their Bus). A Tiger only zoo with on or two Lions, go figure, Hey its China. They also have a Liger or a Tion not sure which it is. Just know its half Tiger, half Lion.

If you are not so blood thirsty like you average local don't buy the live chickens/rabbits if you are not prepared to set them loose in a field full of hungry Tigers. Gruesome...

Outside the Children's Park

by mke1963 about Outside the Children's Park

Just outside the Children's Park, there is a little coffeeshop . We found nowehere open inside the park, but this place is just to the left of the main exit.
It has the usual Chinese coffeeshop of festooned tropical plastic foliage and tiny booths, but it was warm and they served the drinks quickly.

The coffee was, ummmm, unusual but drinkable.

Like many coffeeshops in China, this one doubles up as a bar and a disco. It's a curious mixture of activities that I have, personally, never seen outside China, but here the coffeeshop-cum-bar-cum-disco is the norm. No idea why.

I think shopping is the best...

by dandan

I think shopping is the best thing to do other than gone to famous places to take pictures and play. Things are often very cheap in the stores comparing to other country or cities. The qualities are fine too. There are all different kinds of stores and underground malls. those are the places people love the most, especially for people coming from other countries. at night time, after dinner when the sun went down, people come out of their house to go to the the night street where people gathered together to form a whole street of busniss corners. others like young people can go to clubs, play balling or dancing... all i want to say to you is that harbin is the cities of both day and night.

Harbin, One of China oldest northern cities!!

by mrtrainer

"Fantastic place only very Cold in the winter!!"

Harbin, China is a wonderfull place. From their airport to Harbin. I thought I was in parts of Canada. Large corn and wheat farms.
Annie was my tour guide. She was a big help. You must have one if you don't speak chinese. She also good to buy something!! Or any money deal. She goes first and then I come. Annie had the best attitude of any woman or person I ever have known. She never stopped smiling. In bad days also. What a gal!!
Please note!!! Not all pictures in my profile are no all my own. I found pictures from other club members that happen to be to places I went to. Sorry for making anyone upset. I loved China to travel to. I personnally had a wonderfull time when I went there. I would tell anyone to try China for a vacation!!

"One of many pictures of Harbin!"

This is a basic part of town. I have other picutre in the other parts of this profile!

"Taking a trans ride out side the city of Harbin!!"

Harbin has the longest trans. It goes from the city to and animal park re serve for tigars!! Unbelievable. It crosses over the top of their big river.
