Nice Hotel with One Problem
The Modern hotel is a 1906 vintage hotel that has been updated several times. On the 3rd floor the old woodwork still exists and it is wonderful. On each door, there is a story in Chinese about a famous person who stayed in the hotel.
I would recommend it for the location. It is right on the walking street and next to a Harbin beer garden! The rooms are clean and comfortable.
There is one problem. Harbin is very far north and east. Combined, this means the sun is up at 4:00 AM. I found the hotel does not have blackening curtains, so I was up at 4:30AM every day. I changed rooms from the top floor where the windows were very big and bright, to the third floor where the windows were smaller. The 3rd floor room was better, but there was still too much light.
Unique Quality: Plenty of history in this hotel! It has some charm and is a perfectly good hotel, except for blackout curtains.

harbin's most famous hotel
It is my dream. The famous film "harbin in the dark" shows that lots of history come from here. This hotel is built at 1906 by a foreigner, from that time, all imprtant people: politician, rich people, even spy or famous star came here.
there is also a interesting story about it's name: The owenr of the hotel is a Russia at that time, so he named it Моперн, after the Russia revolution, the owner went to France with his family, when the Japanees invaded in Harbin, he changed the hotel name to French. And now , it is English.
