Good Luck to Everyone in Harbin
by calcaf38
We just got the news in America, that Harbin is having a pollution crisis, and that there is no running water.
I can't imagine what it must be like, especially during the cold season.
Good luck, pengyoumen, we in America think of you. I hope you get your water back very soon.

Thanks, dude.
I don't live in my hometown anymore since college. My friends in US called me yesterday and asked me if everything is ok. I call my parents everyday to make sure things are doing fine. Thanks for your kindness.
I don't think it will affect the tourist season this year for Harbin. So come and enjoy the beautiful ice and snow fancy in winter.
I happened to find an artical about Harbin on BBC that is using my photo. Go and check it up. lol

Travel Tips for Harbin
Swimming in the river
by mke1963
Hardy folk, these Harbin people. They take particular pleasure in diving into the Songhuajiang in the middle of the winter. This task is not as easy as it sounds, as first of all, it is necessary to cut a hole in the thick ice (Thick enough for loaded trucks to drive on it).
Then ladders are put in place to help the swimmers get out.
The brave swimmers lumber up on the ice for ten minutes - itself no mean feat when it is -20 degrees C. Then with a great flourish they dive head first into the murky black water, swim up and down for a couple of minutes, before climbing out to continue their exercises.
This is such a popular event that they construct grandstands and changing rooms out on the ice.
Although ice swimming is done in several places, the best known is 100 metres out from the river-bank near the Flood Control Monument at Stalin Park.
YanJiaGang International Airport
by THLIN
Of course Air China.
Their service is okay, but their flight technique is quite good. Their food is okay but they offer no milk only a lot of juice and some soft drinks.
You can buy ticket with travel agnecy at Beijing, Sometimes you can receive 50%~ 70% off. The tiny advert is offered in the city. For domestic route in China, passengers must also undergo identity check. Airport tax is bought inside airport. Domestic route price is RMB50. International route( including flights to Hong Kong and Macau) is RMB90.
Snow and Ice: Bingxue Gong
by calcaf38
There are three main locations for the Snow and Ice Festival.
The most frozen-moon like is Bingxue Gong, on the North Bank of the Songhua River. It is extremely cold. With the bright lights, it is almost a near death experience.
This is where the largest ice structures are.
Church of St. Sophia (Sheng...
by PieterB
Church of St. Sophia (Sheng Suofeiya Jiaotang): Build by the Russians in 1907, its exterior has been renovated. For a few yuan you gain access to the church itself. Inside the paint is faling of the walls. There is nothing of the original state restored or preserved. A few copies of russian icon's made by chinese artists try to evocate the old spirit without succeding. But the chuch houses an interesting foto gallery depicting the history of Harbin. Even if most of the captations are only in chinese (some translate in english and russian), it gives an interesting inside of the history of the city. As in most chinese building, dates are given in arabic numbers so you can read them. The square in front of the church is a favorite gathering place for locals, who like to have their picture taken with the church as backgroud.
a city is more russian
by yangshu
when i got to the central street of harbin, i saw a group of japnese turists were shooting the russian style street with cameros. it seems that they appriciate the scenry very much. the street under my foot was setup by stone, smooth and shining. all the store arround us is russian but painted with new color.
i eventually found the original archtectures without any restoring behind the commercial street. they are too russian. although i have not visit the city of russian, but here it gives me a little feeling.
