Song He hotel: Location, Location, Location...

  • The Song He hotel was our initial introduction to China hospitality. We were pleasantly sruprised as we were expecting only a 3 star service hotel (based on internet reviews and price of $69.00/night.
We were amazed at quality of service, cleanliness of room and convinience to all the major shopping and sight seeing spots in Beijing. We could walk to Forbidden City, Tianemen Square. Go shopping in the evening or, stroll through the cultural food pavillion.

Beijing Song He Hotel is in the heart of Beijing, next to the Wangfujing shopping area. 35km from the airport, taxi cab drivers are quite familiar with it.
The convinience of this hotel (for the price range) was it's best feature.
The food buffet in the morning was excellent with plenty of western and Asian breakfast fare. We booked through the following website: http://china-hotelguide.com/hotels/pekshh.htm?GBJ
    and check-in was smooth.

From the moment we checked in we knew this hotel was going to be superb.
The friendliness of the staff, the wonderful setting and the convinient location made this hotel a total winner!
You can leisurely explore Xian (there's alot more to see and do than just the warriors) from the convinience of this hotel.
We would happily recomend this hotel to anyone wishing to go to Xian. You should take the consierge's advice and explore the market areas of Xian.

Managed by the Holiday Inn group (a familiar name to us Westerners), the Bell Tower Hotel was one of our favorites.
The views of the Bell Tower right outside our bedroom window were amazing.
Combined with easy access to the Muslim quarters and, within a 2 minute walking distance to additional restaurants (see restaurant tips) we were left wishing we'd stayed here longer. A delicious breakfast plan is included featuring both Western and Asian fare.

Our room was very clean, modern and the staff was helpful in writing destinations in Chinese for us. Also, they have preprinted cards to help your get to various destinations while you're out and about in Beijing. The cards are in English and Chinese and they also have a side that will tell the taxit driver to take us to the hotel. It was a great resource.

The complimentary buffet had both Chinese and American staples and is well worth filling up on before a day of excessive walking.

Also, the rooms had a great safe and HBO and CNN came in in English.

There are no hairdryers though but a socket for razors only. The showers flood a little but if you do not turn it on full blast and aim it at the curtain, not the wall, you'll reduce the flood. :)

Also, we were given complimentary water everyday for brushing your teeth, comp. combs, comp. toothbrushes and paste, and comp. shampoo/soap.

There is a spa in this hotel that will blow your mind. $11usd for 45 minute foot and calf massage, although I recommend the females over the males and $6usd for a pedicure and I don't believe there was a massage over $40, it was incredible and relaxing. You will need the foot massages after hiking the Great Wall. :)

There is a business room where you can send emails back home or fax docs.

Gift shop is pricey but they're open until 11pm so that's convenient.

    There's a convenience store w/in a 5 minute walk and McDonald's w/in a 10 minute walk.

  • China Hotels and Accommodations
    by Guantanamera
There is a huge variety of accomodations available in China, ranging from posh five star palaces to the simplest of ultracheap guesthouses and hostels... I find that China is one of the best countries in the world for getting value out of the amount you pay... Excellent quality three star hotels with lean rooms including tv, air con, and full bathroom can often be found in most major Chinese cities in the USD $15-30 dollar range... Areas popular with backpackers often offer guesthouses in the USD $10 and under range... Hong Kong is one of the toughest places to find good value for low cost, and recently I've found that staying in neighboring Shenzhen just across the border is a very interesting alternative: a five star hotel room in Shenzhen can cost as little as staying at the YMCA in Hong Kong...!

Pictured here, the window of one of my favorite hotels in China, the Customs hotel of Shamian Island in Guangzhou...

Most two and three star hotels: Hotels by the hour
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • By mke1963 on August 15, 2004
  • In many countries around the world, the concept of renting a hotel room by the hour is associated with illicit activities, but it is common practice in China and is particularly useful when you are travelling by train or bus.
Many hotels, especially near stations and airports, will rent rooms for around a fifth to a quarter of the nightly rate per hour (less at hotels near stations). This allows you to get a shower and maybe catch up on a few hours sleep after a long train or bus journey.
It is also particularly useful if you suddenly feel a little bit unwell (e.g. hangover, headache, dehydration) or even if you just need a bit of peace and quiet.
This can be a real "sanity saver" if you need to get away from the noise, hustle, and glare of China!

Soft-class sleeper on Chinese Railways: Clickety-clack

  • Soft-class sleeper compartment - China
    Soft-class sleeper compartment
    by mke1963
Soft-class sleepers are a cheap but comfortable experience, and on very long journeys you get to see the Chinese countryside as well.
Soft-class sleepers have fourth berths, two at the top and two at the bottom. The lower berths are slightly more expensive.
If you really want complete privacy it is possible to buy the tickets for all four berths!
When you get on the train, the carriage attendant swaps your ticket for a metal tag, and he or she shows you to your compartment.
It is invariably spotlessly clean. At the start of journeys, the thick duvet and pillows are all stacked on the upper berth.
There is a small table by the window, usually a magazine detailing the train's journey, and some silk or plastic flowers in a little vase. It sounds naff, but the whole effect is very charming.
The loudspeaker (with peipled music) can be turned down or off, and there is a reading light above the bed.
The main lights can be turned off, and the door can be locked from the inside.
Luggage is stored below the lower berth or in a recess above the doorway.
The beds are comfortable, the pillow and duvet clean and fresh.
At one end of the carriage is a Western-style toilet; at the other, a 'hole in the floor' toilet. These are regularly washed and cleaned by the carriage attendant.
There is also a washroom at one end.
Fold up setas along the corridor allow you to sit on the other side of the train if you wish.
Most trains these days are air-conditioned, but one window opposite the carriage attendants room opens and this is useful for taking photographs if the carriage windows are dirty (but they are usually not!)

Fantastic views! Comfortable seats/beds! Drinkable hot water in a flask (refillable at the end of the carriage)
