Sim's Cosy Guesthouse: May be a good option in Chengdu

by bratty101

We stayed here back in 2008, actually we were there during the big Chegdu earthquake (everyone was ok though).

This place had a great Travel Information Centre to help out with trips to Songpan, Tibet, and other areas.

It's a massive hostel (was an apartment building) but the dorms are spacious and have dividing curtains and individual reading lights.

They have great Japanese gardens inspired and built by the previous owners Sim and Maki. They also have a large library with lots of reading areas and outdoor decked seating.

This was the best hostel we stayed at in China. It was sociable, there was lots of space, and the staff were great. It was a hard place to leave.

It has to be said that the amazing owners Sim & Maki, have now gone travelling with their 2 daughters. They left in Dec 2010 and I'm not sure what impact this may have had on the property. I would suggest in addition to this review that you look at Hostelworld or Hostelbookers for other up to date info.

Luxury to Dorm beds: Accommodation In China

by cal6060

Accommodation in China can be range from 6 stars resorts to dorm beds.

I have stayed in Sheraton Shanghai on my first visit to Shanghai. It is just like any 5 or 6 stars hotel. It was nice and luxury. But It does not mean the location is great. The price can be slightly cheaper than in western countries, but it can be more expensive than other parts of Asia. Expect to pay international rates in Beijing or Shanghai.

China's hotels that run by the locals can be question with their rating. Their expectations are different than the rest of the World. You have to be careful with those below three or four stars. We had stayed in a three-stars hotel that they turned off their centralized air-condition system after mid-night to save energy, even in hot summer. Their hot showers are only available at certain time, again save energy. Even you pay a high price for their stars, you will be getting that kind of services. We even have encountered one hotel refused to refund our deposit due to whatever reason they have. So be careful... My advise is that just don't walk-in to any hotel that you don't know. Check online with reviews and comments from others before you go there.

Well, sometimes you are lucky to stay in those guesthouses with friendly staffs and owner. This usually happen in tourist towns like Yangshuo, Dali, or Lijiang, etc. Prices are very competitive too.

I booked my hotels through Chinese Hotel booking websites nowadays. I frequently book through www.elong.net. Why, they have better selections of hotels, competitive prices with great discounts sometimes, their English website is easy to use, reliable as it is famous in China. I encountered an issue with them last year, and they did not reply or feedback regard my issue. They confirmed a hotel which does not allow foreigners to stay.

Alternate reliable website is www.ctrip.com

China has a law that Hotels, Motels, or Inns need to have special permit to accommodate foreigner visitors. If they don't have the permit and being caught by the authority, It is a serious offense that might have to close down their business.

Home Inns: Home Inns In China

by cal6060

I discovered Home Inns in Suzhou on 22/6/2004. We arrived in Suzhou, and looked for a hotel. I booked this hotel because of the price and the location. We stayed here and discovered that the room was clean with modern efficient shower for only Y130 per night. In 2004, there were not many chain hotels yet, only in some major cities. Every year I come back, I see more of Home Inns in China, but the prices are getting more expensive each year. Still, Home Inns is still consider cheaper than a lot of hotels or Inns in China with that kind of comfort and conveniences.

You can expect the same comfort in all their chain hotels in China.

1) They usually located in strategic locations.
2) Their prices are competitive.
3) Their shower rooms are always modern and nice.
4) They have fast internet line, you need to bring your own laptop.
5) If you read Chinese, they have Chinese books left in the room for you to read as leisure.
6) They come with a water dispense in each room with hot and cold water.

The problem is that they don't have an English website for booking. And they hardly use third party for reservation. If you email them in English, they might not response to you as most of their staffs don't speak or write English. If you want to make reservation, you can call their hotline or just walk-in one of their hotels to ask.

Run by look alike 7 Eleven staffs, courteous and helpful.

A very decent accommodation with all basic necessities: privacy, clean bedding, air con, private hot water bath, internet, simple meals. Near to Beijing Road Shopping Street.
