Guiyuan Temple is famous as the first Chan (Zen) temple to be built in Hubei. It was constructed in 1658. It is a large complex, featuring many a variety of structures with the most famous being the Hall of Arhats, which was built in 1850. There are 500 arhat (Buddhist disciples) statues inside. They are said to have taken nine years to carve, and each is unique. They are so beautiful and many are quite intricate; worth the time to walk around to see all of them!
When you first enter the temple, you are to choose which path you want to take and then count the arhats stopping on your age. There you are to write down the number of that arhat and when you leave the temple, you can ask to purchase a card of that arhat that gives you your fortune, providing some added fun to the experience. The fortunes are in Chinese, but even if you can't read it, it makes a nice souvenir (especially since pictures are not allowed in the Hall of Arhats).
Entrance is 10 yuan.
