This hotel is the standard Chinese 4-star hotel, but has gained itself that coveted fifth star for some reason. Possibly the acreage of its banqueting facilities or the number of car parking spaces reserved for black Audis outside.
The room was good...but not great. The bathroom was OK. The room temperature stuffy. The lobby was gargantuan with plenty of marble, gold, glitz and al ambience and cosiness brushed away into oblivion. There was the usual odd-looking furtive man in a dark suit chain-smoking in a big leather sofa by the front window.
The bar was devoid of character and people (Where on *earth* do Lonely Planet authors get their information? Someone must surely have been winding them up when they described this bar!!)
The hotel shop (cunningly and bizarrely hidden behind the bar) had the usual assortment of laoban goodies but nothing that could really be described as useful.
Errrr....that's about it. 500 kuai will get you antiseptic blandness and service with an inane grin. If your arm had just been severed in an unfortunate accident with a chainsaw, these people would greet you with a big plastic smile and "How can I help you, sir?"
But despite this, I would happily stay here again.
One word of warning. This antiseptic bland hotel is a long way from the best parts of Changsha - eating, drinking , seeing, transport, museums, river.
Unique Quality: "Unique qualities" and "China 4 star hotel" are rarely used in the same sentence.
