Mausoleum of Dr Sun Yatsen - Part II

by mke1963

The mausoleum area is huge and stretches up the entire hillside of Zijinshan to the northeast of Nanjing, and it is a busy place during the weekends. At the bottom, a ceremonial archway is etched with the word “Fraternity’ in Sun Yatsen’s handwriting. After a half-kilometre boulevard flanked by gingko and maple trees, is a further gateway, this time etched with the words “The World Belongs to the People”. High up above is the white marble mausoleum hall, up 392 steps: this flight is deliberately designed to hide the mausoleum building until the last step, intending to remind visitors that the revolution ‘ain’t over until it’s over’, although I’m sure Sun Yatsen would have expressed it somewhat more eloquently.
In the mausoleum itself, a statute of Sun Yatsen stares down silently, while the surrounding walls are etched with the entire constitution of the first republic.
Behind the mausoleum is a very small and very quiet garden among the pine trees, and a worthy place to rest and contemplate what might have been had Yuan Shikai not forced Sun Yatsen to the fringes of Chinese politics in 1912 at the very time when Sun’s skills and diplomacy could have changed the course of Chinese history.

by Willettsworld

The origins of this Confucius Temple date back to 1034, while the current buildings date to the late 19th century. The temple was the seat of Confucian study for more than 1500 years. The temple is surrounded by small side streets and a canal.
