Travel Tips for Nanjing

Dr. Sun Yat Sen's Mausoleum

by yipsufen

This mausoleum is a great work of architecture & its foundation is built upon 392 steps & 7 platforms. Once you climbed up all the steps & have reached the top, do not forget to look back. You will be grasped by the breathtaking view on top. From this vantage point high up, the many steps below seem to disappear, creating an optical illusion of a smooth slope. You are unable to see the 9 platforms below. They have been disguised by the great detail of architecture. Beside this, one can get a chance to take a photo stitch of this landscape or simple enjoying the lush greenery.

The tomb of Dr. Sun Yat Sen is situated at the top with his marble sitting statue.

There are some stone benches on the 9 platforms to rest those tired feets.

If you fancy some stones for your aquariums / plants, here you can choose various colourful pebbles. They are called rain and flower stones. They are perfect for decorating your home. Souvenir stalls are arranged alongside the foot of the mausoleum.

This tourist attraction is very crowded with tourists from all around China to pay respect to Dr. Sun Yat Sen. Parking for personal vehicles and tour coaches are quite far from the mausoleum, be prepared to walk and climb up the steps.

Please note that smoking is prohibited here.

Inside the Beamless Hall

by socrates_07

Inside the Beamless Hall is a collection of wax figures about the Chinese history, most of them in the time of the 19th and 20th century. Its for free (that doesnt happen very often in China) and if you are on the way to the Linggu Pagoda you should take a short visit.

one of China's six ancient capitals&cultural city

by cpim2004

Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu Province. It lies in the lower reaches of the Changjiang River, covering 6.5 thousand square kilometers, with a population of 5.1 million. Perennial temperature averages 15.6 degree Celsius and precipitation 1,107 mm.

Being one of China's six ancient capitals and cultural centers, it was built 2400 years ago and was the capital of eight dynasties-the Eastern Wu, the Eastern Jin, the Song, the Qi, the Liang, the Chen, the Southern Tang and the early Ming dynasties. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, a regime set up by a nationwide peasants' uprising, had its capital here for 11 years. Following the Revolution of 1911, it was there that Dr. Sun Yat-sen assumed his office of provisional president.

Nanjing had the world's longest city wall-extending 34 km-in the 14th century and the world's only glazed pagoda-the Pagoda at the Temple of Paying Debt of Gratitude-in the 15th century. The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the longest bridge across the Yangtze River. Qinhuai River is the cradle of civilization around Nanjing. Dozens of Neolithic primitive sites have been unearthed along the river. It is famous for the wealth of ancient sites, gardens, painted boats, streets and folklore. Historically, the place teemed with nobles and men of letters. At its peak years during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Qinhuai was bustling with businessmen, whorehouses and racing lantern boats.

Nanjing's topography is complex. There are many lowlands and downloads, and in the mountains, there are some wide plains. The Yangtse River flows from the Northwest to the Southeast. It's the monsoon climate in the inferior torrid zone. The average annual temperature is 15-16 degree Celsius. And the average annual precipitation is 1,100mm. The black frost period can last 230 days. The area along the Yangtse River is Huadong iron ore. There is brass, zinc, lead, strontium, limestone and many other ones. The resources of them are all abundant.

Nanjing is one of the important hub of communications in China. The railway, highway and aviation are all convenient. Nanjing port is the biggest port of the inland rivers. It has the function of a seaport, for big ships can be moored here. The ships here can get to Jiujiang, Wuhan, Chongqing, Shanghai as well as many other places.

Zhong Mountain is the national major place of interest. Zhong Mountain and the Xuanwu Lake are the centers. And also, there are numerous mountains, lakes and other beautiful buildings. They are the most magnificent scenery in China.
