Getting a local guide or not
by SLLiew
Nanjing has many historical tourist destinations and musuems that can be reached by car, bus or taxis. I had transport and a Shanghainese driver and decided to hire a local tour guide. An English speaking guide is more expensive than a Chinese speaking guide for the whole day. I opted for Chinese as some descriptions cannot be translated.
It definitely worth hiring a local tour guide for the day. Ask your hotel reception to arrange for this free lance service.

Stone Elephant Road
by Willettsworld
The Stone Elephant Road is located in the Ming Tomb Scenic Area of the Purple Mountains. It is the first section of the Sacred Way and is 615 meters long. Along the road are six kinds of stone animals including lions, Xiezhi (a mythical animal), camels, elephants, unicorns and horses. Carved out of whole pieces of stone in full relief, these animals are imposing and great photo opportunities!
Linggu Temple Scenic Area
by Willettsworld
The temple was first built in 515 under the reign of the Liang Dynasty (502-557). It used to lie at the northeast foot of the Purple Mountains where the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum is now located, since Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang chose the place to be his mausoleum and then the temple was moved to the present place. The temple was named by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang himself. It used to be large and covered an area of over 300,000 square metres. Later it was destroyed in warfare under the reign of Emperor Xianfeng and rebuilt under the reign of Emperor Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The approach to the temple features a wonderful hall known as the Beamless Hall built without a piece of wood or a single nail. The temple itself is fairly unremarkable and there seemed to be both construction and deconstruction going on when I was there. It's the Linggu Pagoda that draws visitors as it's possible to climb for great views.
