Overcoming Power Shortage

Due to power shortage, the riverside lights of this popular Nanjing tourist spot is not fully lighted after certain hours. This is a famous river where on side, used to be examination halls for poor scholars hoping to become wealthy and powerful mandarins one day and on the other side the red light district of women, song and wine.
So you can take a digitized picture to ensure that you have the correct background where all the lights are lighted to show friends back home. At least it was taken at the actual site.

Plenty of interesting shops ranging to cheap and inferior tourist souvenir and some modern shops. As usual, you need to bargain in those shops that do not have a fix price . As a guide, if the shops have English signboard or have very modern sign board, these are fixed price shops. Other than that, do bargain as if you are on the amazing race and you need to save money.
Normal guideline is to go for 50% as a start and work to around 30% for the final price. Chinese shop owners expect you to bargain and will mark up price to a ridiculous level to hope for some unlucky tourist to fall for it.
Purple Mountain Observatory - Instruments

The Purple Mountain Astronomical Observatory exhibits many Chinese astronomical instruments outside. On show is an Abridged Armillary made in 1437 used to measure both the equatorial and horizontal co-ordinates of celestial objects; a Gnomon, also built in 1437, used to determine summer and winter solstices; a Celestial Globe and an Armillary Sphere.
