Haoson Hotel: Good budget hotel near Guanqian Jie

    • I (actually, my senior and his parents) stayed at the Haoson Hotel (Hao2 Sheng4 Bin1 Guan3) for 3 nights this past weekend, and all of us are so pleased with the hotel that I thought I'll recommend it. The hotel is newly opened in Oct 2004, so I don't think it's in any guidebooks yet! Even walking at the slowest speed possible (well, we WERE with his parents), you can reach Guanqian Jie within 15 minutes. To call directly to any room it's 86-512-67025122 and then press the room number when you hear the recorded voice message.
    We actually booked a deluxe double with extra bed for 260+60=320 RMB, when we got there, they actually had a triple room so we were given that room instead for the same price. The room was roomy and faced the main street, with plenty of sunlight pouring in, giving a cheerful feel to the room. The beds were definitely clean and very comfy. :) The aircon and all other electrical appliances in the room (TV, water heater etc) worked well, and having a lot of electrical sockets around the room was a definite plus since we had about 3 or 4 different handphones to charge simultaneously! Overall, the room and attached bathroom was sparkling clean.
    The price quoted online is 230 RMB for a twin with ensuite, 260 RMB for a deluxe twin with ensuite and 430 RMB for a suite, 60 RMB for extra bed. Which is good cos the counter price for a deluxe twin is 430 RMB and a triple is 420 RMB!

    The combination of graceful environment, exquisite service & traditional Suzhou-style atmosphere provided by Wuyue Mountain Villa Hotel makes an unforfeitable experience in feeling the ultimate comfort & convenience. Although the hotel is not situated in Suzhou city area but it offers a peaceful & relaxing environment for accommodation.

    I like the bedside control panel, which you can control everything in the room without stepping down from your bed.

    Located not far from the center of town, large rooms and a nice water garden in the middle of the hotel, try to book a room facing the garden. Breakfast buffet great selection both western and Chinese food.

    Greet pool and some exercie facility if walking around Suzhou is not enough to wear you down!

    This is simply one of the best hotels in China. Period. And, yes I have stayed at Grand Hyatts, St Regis, Ritz, etc. While the rooms are on the small size for a 5-star international hotel, this can be easily forgotten as you laze in an ambience that is elegant and classy because it is so understated and subtle. You will find little of the brash, gaudy gold and marble opulence so manifest in the Chinese hotel trade. This is a place that is not just a hotel but a microcosm of southern Chinese classical gardens and Jiangsu architecture.
    The hotel is a wonderful example of what can be created when attention to detail and cultural heritage is blended with 21st Century commercial ambitions.
    The main attraction is the water garden outside the main building, yet this is the least ‘authentic’ of the warren of small courtyard gardens designed into every nook and cranny.
    This is a hotel where you feel that going out sightseeing somehow misses the point, as the atmosphere and gardens inside the hotel are so stunning. I could live in this place.
    It is exceptionally rare for me to describe any hotel as a great experience but the Sheraton Suzhou comes into that category.
    It is not cheap, but it is superb.

    I have reviewed the gardens at the hotel separately as these are worth visiting in their own right.
    The hotel has several good restaurants, but these are its weak point in a city famed for its cuisine: there are better choices in the same street for a fraction of the price.

    The hotel has an indoor pool as well as a rather uninspiring outdoor pool, but sadly no poolside bar or refreshments unless you go, dripping, into the coffee-shop in the hotel.
    Of note is a souvenir shop that has some particularly good and something rather valuable at a price that makes me suspect that they don’t really know what they are selling (and I am certainly not telling people here although it is entirely legal and authentic!).

    I discovered upon my arrival in Suzhou that hotels here were rather expensive. As was the case when I arrived in Nanjing, I did not have a reservation for the three nights that intended on staying here. I thought that I would be able to find a reasonably priced hotel with ease. I was wrong. The first two hotels I checked out wanted something near Y1600 a night. I finally ended up at this place which was reasonably priced but well away from most of the city's attractions.
    The New Century Hotel is a large cement block hotel that China has become infamous for. Well maintained and clean for sure but there is no character. Although I initially faulted the place for its location, it was near the Lingering Garden and a pleasant street mall.

    The hotel has two bars that are way overpriced. The hotel claims to serve Western food here but I could find any. I did have a good Chinese meal however. My room had satellite TV but oddly enough the only English speaking station feature Christian based programming mostly for children.

    Well seeing as we only stayed for about an hour, I cant really describe very much for you...sorry!!! In the Rough Guide, it states the following...."A big three-star garden-style affair with an immaculate lobby. The new wing has luxury rooms, while the old wing still offers reasonably priced doubles and triples". So i thought GREAT! My mum loves gardens so I thought she could stroll round them in the evening!

    It was of course raining cats and dogs when we arrives so all strolling was out of the question....but so were the luxury rooms!!!! Apparently the 'new' wing, which was in fact the 'original' wing was being totally refurbished! And all guests were being put in the oldest of old wings! Everything was brown, not to mention the leaking taps, and the stains on the carpets! So within an hour we were checked out and moving to our next hotel....The Friendship Hotel!

    I must admit that the staff at the Nanlin were very understanding and didnt charge us anything. They knew that the rooms were not up to scratch...we were afterall only going to be paying around 180yuan per night...and so completely understood when we said we were off! The staff were friendly and Im sure by now the original and newer of the two wings is fully operational. From brochures I picked up, it definitley looks like a lovely place to stay...it's just a shame we got there when they were doing works to it.

    The receptionist did sort out our train tickets back to Shanghai however with only a 5% commission.

    This hotel comes with our package group tour. So do not put your expectations to high.

    Usually the tour groups will be put up at a budget hotel far away from town.

    • The rooms were modern and clean with a large window overlooking pretty garden at rear. The bathroom was good, there was TV but only Chinese programmes but never mind we were too tired to watch in any case.
    Did not have breakfast there as it was all Chinese and we could not face that for breakfast - so we bought some rolls and juice and ate in our room. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We would have liked to go into the bar but it had not opened as the hotel was very new.

    There was nothing really outstanding about the hotel - we liked the little gardens and there were a couple of souvenir shops on the ground floor. By now, a year later it might have other facilities. But what impressed us most was the cleanliness.
