Travel Tips for Suzhou

The Museum of Ancient Chinese Sex Culture

by Paul2001

The Museum of Ancient Chines Sex Culture is one of the more interesting and provocative attractions within Tongli. The museum is a collection of 1,200 artifacts relating to sex activity. The artifacts are divided up into various categories such as the repression of women, sexual positions, sexual devices, homosexuality and various kinky aspects towards sexual activity. These displays are spread out in two buildings that once held a girls school. I was surprised by the maturity of the exhibitions. Clearly the intention here is to educated rather than exploit. Just the same I might recommend that you do not bring the kids along.
The museum is open daily from 8:30am to 5pm.

Qili Santang Historical and Cultural Street

To re-create the sights of ancient Suzhou, this street was built. We took this picture during the evening, when all the lanterns and lights were on. In the past, polygamy was allowed, and Chinese men would use the lanterns to "show off" how many wives each of them had (one lantern means one wife, two means two wives...you get the drift). Every night, the man could stay with a different wife, and he would indicate his choice by lighting up the lantern on the preferred wife's door. This tradition was also depicted in director Zhang Yimou's movie - "Raise the Red Lantern", which starred actress Gong Li.

Gardens, gardens, everywhere!

by dianauni

Unfortunately there was torrential rain on the day we arrived by train from Shanghai so we did not do much that afternoon until it cleared up a bit. Then we went to visit the Silk Museum which was interesting but would have been better had there been people there to explain things to us and show us how the looms worked.

We saw baskets and baskets of silk worms - yuk !! But without them what would China do?!

We had booked via the internet into what looked like a lovely hotel but in fact was a tip! One part of the hotel was being renovated and we were in the other part which looked like something out of the dark ages, literally, everything in the room was brown. Heavens only knows what hotel photo they used for their internet advert. My daughter, clever girl that she is, had made a double booking at another hotel, the Friendship, so we called a taxi and beat a quick retreat there. That was perfect, brand new with little gardens where we took photos the following day when the sun was out.
The only downside to the hotel were the mosquitos - scores of them in our room and in the hotel generally.

The next morning we made a trip out of Suzhou - see Tongli page - but the following day we went to the famous gardens of Suzhou, the most famous being The Humble Administrator's Garden. Although there were quite a few people there it was very tranquil and one could sit and day dream which I did! It was lovely to see the flowers and streams and unusual rock formations.

We also visited another garden whose name I have forgotten - will look it up and add here later on, That one had waterfalls and pagodas and lots of grass - very pretty. There were loads of other gardens to visit but we had been to so many the day before so two in Suzhou were enough for us.

When we left the second garden we found lots of shops selling crockery so bought a couple of small dishes with bamboo design. I imagine they were very run of the mill in China but I've not seen them in Europe and I like them!

Funnily enough in Suzhou we never ate any Chinese food. On our first night we had some sort of a casserole in a small cafe type place which was not too bad and on our second night upon our return from Tongli the only place we could find open near our hotel was an Italian restaurant so it was spaghetti bolognese for us! It was pretty good as was the water melon juice drink!

We seemed to be the only Westerners in the town so received some strange looks! But it was a lovely visit.

In case you don't know Suzhou, or part of it, is built on canals, is known as the Venice of the Orient and is a haven for artists.
