I understand there is a silk festival in Suzhou each year in September. We will be there on September 13. Will there be any festivities? We will only be there for the day, but I'd like to purchase a length of silk fabric as a souvenir to make something back at home. Does this sound possible? Or is it very expensive for a bolt of cloth, maybe a few yards/feet/metres? Where is the best place to go to bargain for a good deal on a decent length of silk cloth? Thanks!

Not sure about the silk festival, but I'm very sure you could buy silk cloth. If not in Suzhou, certainly in Shanghai.
How expensive it is depends on the quality, where you're buying it, and perhaps also your bargaining skills.
You should consider getting the tailoring done in China, since it would probably be cheaper than at home.

The Garden of the Master of Nets - Part 1
by mke1963
One of the most stunning examples of classical southern Chinese garden design is the Garden of the Master of Nets, the old garden of a Qing dynasty courtier Song Zongyuan. He bought a house and garden originally built in 1180 in the Southern Song Dynasty by an earlier courtier, Shi Zhengzhi. Covering just 1.5 hectares, this is an absolute masterpiece of design, integrating the living quarters neatly with the open landscapes. The eastern half is laid out in traditional style around three halls - the Sedan Hall (with its absurdly high, prestigious raised threshold) complete with traditional sedan. A nice touch is the carved brick tablets of the old family from the Song Dynasty, a rare sight these days. The brick gateway beyond doubled up as a fire-door, and the panels are inlaid with bricks: fire was an ever-present threat in crowded old towns mde mainly of wood! Look for the carvings of lions, bats and peony flowers around this gateway. The main recetion hall behind was known as the Ten Thousand Volumes Hall, with its unusual bronze drums (more cmmon in south-western China than here in the centre). Separate reception halls with bedrooms upstairs provided a more private area for th women of the family. Small - tiny - courtyards, each planted very carefully with trees to provide a specific foliage effect or scent, separate the small pavilions.
Pan Gate
by Willettsworld
Pan Gate was first built in 514 B.C. during the Wu Kingdom of Spring and Autumn Period (770BC-476BC) and is part of the ancient city wall that surrounded and protected Suzhou. It is the only well preserved water-and-land city gate in the world. The double water gate is a pioneering work in architectural history. There is a sluice on the gate which can be closed and open by a stone gate at any time to control the water as well as resist aggression. The present Pan Gate was built in the 11th year of the reign of Zhizheng (1344).
