Where else in China are you going?
If you're going to be in Tongli and Shanghai as well, I wouldn't say there's any garden in Suzhou that's a must-see except perhaps Lion Grove or Master-of-Nets Garden. I would instead use that time to see Tiger Hill and Coiled Gate instead, and also Hanshan Temple if possible.
You might want to have half a day plus a little of the next morning in Suzhou.

No, not really. I my opinion you should experience not just see some of Suzhou. A rush to just see kind of misses the point of going to gardens. With the probability of there being lots of visitors it will take extra time to find that quiet moment. You might do better spending extra time at a special park in Shanghai.

Travel Tips for Suzhou

Deep Blue Waves Pavilion Garden

by cheezecake_deli

The little-visited Deep Blue Waves Pavilion Garden (Canglang Ting) is the oldest surviving of Suzhou's classical gardens, having been first laid in 1044. Water isn't a prominent feature here (though there is one pond and a surrounding moat), and the centre of the garden is dominated by a mound on top of which is a pavilion. You will notice the distinct absence of tour groups here, making the garden a peaceful retreat that it was, no doubt, meant to be. The garden also utilises the technique of "borrowing" a view - though less famously than the Humble Administrator's Garden.

The Venice of the east

"Suzhou"

Suzhou is located in the south-east of Jiangsu Province about an hour by car west of Shanghai. Like many other towns nearby, the Grand Canal constructed during the Sui Dynasty 581-618 flows thru town.

Suzhou is 2500 year old, making it one of China's oldest citiies, (built in 541BC) and is the birthplace of Wu culture. The city is has many historical places and culture. Depending where you read, many people place Suzhou third behind Beijing and Xi'an for its historical and cultural significance. After being there, even for just a short time, I definitely agree.

In 1997 Suzhou's classic gardens placed on the UNESCO list as a World Cultural Heritage site. Suzhou is a key silk production center in China.

When Visiting Suzhou a visit to Tongli is a must! Tongli is about 11 east of Suzhou and is really either in or close to Wujiang, but I include Tongli as being in Suzhou.
