The Gloria Plaza Hotel in Nanchang is like a thousand other 4 star hotels in China (actually I think somehow this is a 5 star hotel...there must be either a bolwing alley or a chess room somewhere): it's seen how foreign 4 and 5 star hotels do it and try to copy the "form" without recognising that it is the "function" that creates that "form". It's bland, dim, musty smelling and everything is just so beige, brown, sand, khaki colour with slightly cheapo furniture and odd afterthoughts (like a big power cable extension stipr nailed to the wall by the mirror). It's thoroughly "OK" in that it provides a comfortable bed, a decent shower and broadband, but the kind of place you would hate to be in for more than a couple of nights. There is no bar (but given the state of Chinese hotel bars usually, this may be a blessing) and has the usual "sleeping oaf" lying across a sofa in the lobby. (Are these people, invariably dressed in a charcoal 'Playboy' polo-neck and three-inch-too-short 'slacks' just recruited for this purpose? Is there a Dozing Slob agency out there somewhere?) Like most tall buildings in China, seeing outside is made difficult by the inch-deep grime encrusted on the window. The coffee shop is actually quite good though.
