what constitutes a decent wage

by Idlehound

Hi Folks

My wife and I are planning to move to Dalian from London in August. We are in the process of organising work and I'm wondering just what is a decent wage and what will have us scrimping. We are both teachers and will be teaching English, the plan is for a year. We have been offerd between 3 and 4,000 yuan but other institutions in other parts of China have offered between 7 and 10,000 which sounds much better but I really fancy the sound of Daliian.
I hope someone can help because I am anticipating a call from our contact in the next day or so and I suspect he'll want to talk about money, I don't want to ask for too much but at the same time I don't want to sell ourselves short.
Many thanks for taking the time to read this

regards

IH

Dalian is decent, but that wage!

by Confucius

You need to clarify the entire employment package by asking about things like housing and transportation.
4000 yuan is fine in Dalian if the package includes housing and other benefits.
If you can make double that wage (8000 RMB or higher) in other parts of China then you should have mentioned exactly where those offers are located.
I can't think of many places in China that are so horrible that even a 10,000 RMB wage would not sound attractive. Shenzhen is one, Shenyang is another. Other than those two nasty cities (the armpits of China) there are few in which a 10,000 RMB salary would not be delightful.

Depends on your hours

by Reyes

4000RMB has been the amount most foreigners I know are earning where I am living (a smallish provincial town on the yangtze) for very few hours indeed. This usually covers living on campus in generally cramped quarters, sharing a kitchen, sometimes even sharing a bathroom. There are much better packages around but if you're really keen on Dalian in particularwhich is , by all accounts one of the more pleasant cities in china, .... up to you?

As the others have said, check the package.

It sounds a little cheap to me, as I am earning 6000 a month in a place that is nowhere as nice as Dalien, but I suppose that it's the law of supply and demand. The less attractive the coty the higher the wages.

Dalien is nice, but it has very little history and is a long way from everywhere, you have a 4 hour train ride to Shenyang beffore you can even consider visiting the rest of china.

If you want any info on teaching in China etc then feel free to contact me

Oh, and by the way, if the package includes accomodation (with electricity, ga etc) and pays for your airfare, then 4000 is easily enough to live on in China, but you probably won't save any money

Travel Tips for Dalian

Policewomen

by socrates_07

policewomen. Was it my fault if the weather was bad whenever I wanted to take photos from that square. Or if I had the wrong camera with me? No, it was just a COINCIDENCE that I went to Dalian's only square with Policewomen that often.

by Jorgito_lindo about I-55 Coffee Stop

This is a place I recommend only if you've traveling in China for a long time and miss Western food or if you want to eat at an American style coffee shop. It used to be place to go when I wanted a good cup of coffee but now that Starbucks is in town, I'm not going so often.
They have a very nice breakfast buffet on weekends and menu in English. I go there for the coffee and sandwiches

Sakura in Dalian - Long Wang Tang

"Long Wang Tang Shui Ba" is a big dam. Oops.. I forgot whether it is a reservoir or dam. Excuse me...

It is beautiful in April during the Sakura season. You will see many visitors at that time.
