What is life like in Dalian

by Ger34

Hi everyone, Ni hoa!
I am going to Dalian in January for approx 1 year. I have many questions, but will stick to the basics, any help is appreciated. I need to know the general day to day stuff at the very least. For example!
1. How much is rent per month of a place in Dalian city of say 4 star?
2. What would it cost for cleaning service? or is this usually included?
3. How much would it be to get a taxi everyday for a journey of 20 minutes?
4. How much would it cost to survive one day i.e perhaps eating lunch and evening meal, not in a top restaurant... just average.
5. Is it a safe place to walk around by yourself .
6. Is there places where you can meet expats or even Chinese ppl as I have no idea what the culture will be like.
7. Importantly how much is it for leisure like a gym for a year?
8. Last but not least...what is the price of a pint of beer in a pub, average?

Thank you in advance!

Xie xie

Never been there but I was told there are a couple of pubs. A rare thing in most of China so there must be a good sprinkling of expats there.

Beer in China is cheap. Tsingdao which seems the most popular with expats is RMB3.60 per 600ml bottle at the supermarket or usually around RMB25 for the 330ml? in a bar or restaurant. As with any comodity prices vary a bit. In Shenzhen I was paying RMB28 for Australian beers (Coopers or VB if you are familiar with Aussie beers)

I don't know how current this is. but as pointed out there is an expat website for Dalian (as there is for most of the major Chinese cities)

For the taxi work on RMB8.00 flagfall (and first 3 K) and RMB2 per kilometer and you shouldn't be far out.

Look at option of staying in a hotel. I stayed in one in Shenzhen for over three years as the conveniences outweighed the downside for me. It was RMB3000 a month but I would expect it to more than that now. You should be able to find a place to rent for RMB4500 plus outgoings (electricity/gas). make sure you get a Chinese to negotiate it unless there is an expat run service there and that it is done properly -ie you register with the PSB at that address. Try and get the lease either in a company name or your name.

Internet Cafe

I am sitting right now in an internet cafe that is at the angle of Youhao ROad and Friendship Square. The connection is quick and it's a good centrally located place.

Lu Shun (Port Arthur)

by A2002

Lu Shun, a coastal city rich in history, is about 47 kilometers Southwest from the center of Dalian.

"Baiyushan Hill (White Jade Hill), towering 130 (426 feet) meters high beside the bay, is the symbol of Lushun. During the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, Chinese soldiers had once fought Japanese invaders on this Hill. Canons built during the War are still found there. Later in the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905, the Japanese and the Russians were found battling each other on Chinese territory. The Hill was then the artillery position of the Russians. Later the Japanese forced Chinese laborers to build a tower to hold ashes of those who perished in the war. The ugly structure is still kept there as an evidence of Japanese invasion into China.

On November 21, 1894, the Japanese soldiers trespassed into Lushun and committed their three-day bloody massacre. 20,000 civilians without any weapon died under the hands of these cruelty acts of these solders. Years later Chinese government built a cemetery in memory of these Chinese who died in the massacre. The cemetery lies on the north side of Jiusan Road.

Remain of Japanese Prison is another important site in Lushun as well as another evidence of Japanese crime in China. Visitors are allowed to inspect the cells including workshops and execution chambers. Hundreds of Chinese people were cruelly killed here. Tour around the prison reminds people of the cruelty of war and inhumanity of Japanese invaders.

The Lushun Museum has a long history among Chinese museums. It was built by the Japanese in 1917. The museum displays massive artifacts, including 6 mummies (which still have hairs attached to it) was stolen from Xinjiang by the Japanese. "

Jinshitan Scenic Area

by elva199

Jinshitan (Golden Stone Beach) Scenic Area is a national scenic park, which lies at the south tip of Liaodong Peninsula and borders Yellow Sea, 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the downtown and adjacent to Dalian economic and technological development zone. The park, having a number of natural wonders, covers 62 square kilometers (24 square miles) land space and 58 square kilometers (22 square miles) maritime space.

At the east part of the peninsula, along the 8 kilometers (5 miles) long coast, splendid rocks formations constitute a natural museum of marine-erosion rocks, goes and rauks, which formed from Sinian to Cambrian. Those vivid rock formations are of great scientific value and appreciation value. Visitors may enjoy these natural splendors on sightseeing buses shuttling along the coast. Most of them are free except those having undergone human reconstruction.

Except for the natural splendor of the area, other recreational facilities have been set up. A golf course having 36 standard fairways, some of them considered very challenging, has opened to public. Additional night golf course is under construction. There is also a hunting ground within forest, a turf, a yacht club, a bathing beach, a coastal park and hotels providing services to visitors.
