I would like to share my experience with those who have studied chinese in Dalian before.
I know there are many possiblities to learn chinese in Dalian, but i would like to know if i am the only person who have had really bad experiences with the attitude of the employees at Chinese Departement of the Dalian university of foreign languages.
I am extremely disappointed about the way they treated some students. I am not sure if it is a general attitude of dalian people or if the number of responsibles at the chinese department were less than needed, but i never felt compfortable when i asked them questions. For a foreign student it is a new world, but when i needed help, they sent me away or answered them totally impatient and unfriendly.
I have heard from a friend who contacted this university before, that they were incompetent and he complained about this university. I did not believe him until i made my own experience.
The teaching is acutally not that bad, but if the whole department is unpleasant, studying there will be unpleasant, too.
I would just like to let some of you know that you should better choose another institute to study chinese.
It take time to change..give them some time.
This is a vicious cycle.Firstly, the public seldom complaint.No specific body to hanle such cases, also the attitude is that even if the complaints get thru,no actions will be taken;so why watse time.
The attitude that u mention is widespread n prevalent in most of the govt.depts. n statutory boards like post office,Vehicle Licensing, etc. especially amongst the lowel levels facing the public.Perhaps ,because they are poorly paid ,working in poor conditions and facing continuous flow of people asking the same questions day in n day out.The job become so mudance n due to the poor morale they inevitably become very grouchy.Let's hope this will change within 2 generations?
Xinghai Square definitely should not be missed. This is the largest square in Asia. There are lots of wide open spaces and really long, straight walkways that radiate in several directions from the center of the square. It is a great place to rent a bicycle. There are also horse carriage rides available here too. Also a great place to fly a kite as many locals do on windy days.
Dalian is not only famous for charming natural scenery but also for large numbers of taxis and the cheapest taxis cost: 1.80RMB per Km with base price 8.00 RMB! It is about 30RMB (US$3 - 4) from the Airport to the hotels by taxi. Additionally, all the city bus cost ranges from 1.00RMB to 2.00 RMB. Please prepare some changes in advance for taxi fee or city bus cost in the staying in Dalian.
On the southern seashore is the 35-kilometer-long Binhai Road, which winds its way like a dancing colored silk cloth from the east to the west of the coast line along the mountainside overlooking the sea.
Binhai Road is a must see place in Dalian. 18 hairpin bends is famous for its steep. The statues on the both sides are also special scene.
