Although it is possible to find these items it is tough and usually more expensive. Bring tampons and deoderant! You can find tampons in Dalian at places like Watson's in Parkland Mall or Mycal, both right by Swisshotel. Deoderant is more of a challenge though. My advice, bring them with you.
Xinghai park is a huge square surrounded by many sino-roccoco flashing lights. To the east is a series of ritzy apartment buildings, and on the sea is a big concrete 'bowl' - with spotlights shining into the night sky at both ends. There's also an imitation "castle" off the square. Chinese theme-park style at it's best. Bewilderingly garish, but yet they put a lot of effort into and it has it's own bizarre charm.
If you are looking for someplace to bring a date, this is probably the most romantic spot in Dalian.
I have been living in Dalian for about 7 months now, as of September 2003.
Dalian is a beautiful city and considered one of the cleanest cities in China. There is almost always something to do in Dalian. The people are great here.
If you are a native English speaker and you need a job, that is no problem in Dalian.
After living in a Southern United States town of 10,000 it is a great expirience to live in a city of 5 million.
The city is large, beautiful, and clean. I will definately be visiting here again.
