No direct trains or buses. Suggest that you break the journey up in Beijing.

Many years ago I used to travel to Weihai from Dalian quite often. I would take a high speed ferry from Dalian to Yantai and take a taxi from there. I don't know if the ferry still runs, but it is a good option to at least get to Shandong province. Once in Yantai, train, bus or car will work.

I also believe there was an old Russian turbojet that flew that route. It still may be possible to get a plane.

There are 8 flights everyday from Dalian to Tsinghdao, full price is rmb590, if possible you can get a discount at the price of Rmb 160~300.
another option: take boat from Dalian to Yantai(6hour), then go to tsingdao by bus.

Ferry and plane as suggested by the other posters, train a waste of time as you have to go all the way up to Beijing and back down.

Travel Tips for Dalian

Dalian Tip

by dr_in_asia

Actually the tournament was held in Yingkou which is north of Dalian. This is a very remote area and the people here had not seen many (if any) westerners up close. The teams from NZL and myself therefore were great attention grabbers. My favorite memory was during the tournament...having just finished a game, I was heading to the players/organizers private bathroom (one of those waist-high squatting stalls with wood-panelling designed linolieum). This is a very basic affair - only 3 stalls and I was alone, which was good because I am tall and the stalls are not built for modesty. Anyway, as I was coming out of the stall the outside door burst open and 3 teenage cheerleaders (they did a routine between every game in the tournament) ran in. I was trying to negotiate my way around them when I realized that they were talking to me and pushing a marker and their hats into my hand. They wanted an autograph! In the middle of the bathroom!! Four more girls were waiting for me outside the stall-I guess they couldn't all fit in at once. This has never happened to me before and although it was kind of startling, it was funny - guess that was my 15 minutes of fame!

Karaoke, then Russian Girls Dancing

by BigXey about JD's (GD's?)

It's really loud Chinese karaoke until 11:00. Then, afterwards, most of the foreigners in Dalian come to dance on the glass stage to whatever music people bring (so bring some if you can't stand listening to Kylie 500 times). Casual, but if you dress up, no one will look at you funny

Tianjin Street

by ahoerner

Tianjin Street is the main commercial street in Dalian.

It's open only for pedestrians, it is normally crowded and after the commercial hours a night market opens with Chinese specialities and food in general.

As the street stretches for a long distance, you find almost everything on it... quite interesting walk.
