Dining (A la carte)
by A2002
Generally in the north of China, the main food (zhu3 shi2) is the dumpling. The other dishes are usually served and the main food will be served last after you have finish the vegetables or meat, etc.
There are several types of dumplings.
Steamed buns (man2 tou2) without filling is one of them. I love steamed buns. There are many types, shapes of steam buns as well, and my favourites among them is the "hua1 juan3" (literally translated as flower swirl).
Another type of dumpling is the "jiao3 zi". These are thin, flat pieces of flour wrapped with meat or vegetable fillings, and then steamed, pan fried or deep fried. There will be some vinegar or soy sauce to dip in. It is a bit too much meat for my liking. These are certainly worth a try and very interesting with the different types of fillings.

Dalian, with the Yellow Sea on its east and the Bohai Sea on its west, enjoys its geographical location on the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula. With mountains and seas around it, the picturesque Dalian enjoys a pleasant climate of mild winter and delightful summer with spring and autumn sensitively felt. Dalian has a total area of 12,574 square kilometers with a coastline of 1906 kilometers and a population of 5.5 million.
Dalian has developed into a well-known dynamic garden-like seaport. Four finely landscaped beach parks provide swimming, boating and water sports right in the city. All over Dalian City spread various squares and all of them are patterned with lawns and blooms: the Charming Sea Square, the Zhongshan Square, the Renmin Square, the Xinghai square. There are many historic markers left by the Russians, Japanese, as well as the Koreans. The multifaceted aspect of Dalian becomes apparent when traveling around the city. The buildings that surround Zhongshan Square are Dalian's testimonials of the past. There are western and Japanese-style buildings on a series of streets built during the occupation of the city by foreign forces. Dalian Guesthouse, located at the centre of Zhongshan Square, is a charming old edifice dating back to 1905. Dalian's other must-see spots include Lushun, Laohutan park, Bangchuidao, Beach Road and Golden Pebble Beach National Holiday Resort.
Seafood is the main ingredient of the city's cuisine. Dalian serves as the largest production base of seafood and fishes. The dried seafood products in Dalian, such as dried abalone, roasted fish sliver, squid chips and dried scallop muscle are as popular as the fresh ones. Dalian also introduces other styles of cuisine such as Japanese cuisine, Korean barbecue, Russian dishes.
Regional products of the city include glassware, embroidery and shell carvings. As an open coastal city, it is also a major joint-venture center for steelworks, shipyards, engineering and textile industries.
