Travelling to China for the first time 7 days in Dalian

Hello,
I will be traveling with a friend to Dalian, China in the beginning of July. We will be staying at the Technical University's hotel there. My friend will be attending a conference for the majority of the daytime hours that we will be there. I would like to know some of your suggestions for fun places, historic sights, that you would suggest for a first time traveler to Dalian. I would appreciate day time suggestions for me, and things that both of us could do at night.(Please rate your suggestions) As well we will be spending 2 days in Bejing, any suggestions on making the most of those days. I do not speak mandarin, but I am a very outgoing adventurer and love trying new things.

Only 2 days in Beijing? I would usually recommend 4-5 days to cover the main sights, or at the very least 3 days. What dates and times do you arrive and leave Beijing? Are you flying in and out, or what?
Dalian's sightseeing is mainly squares and beaches. Lushun (Port Arthur) is of very much historical interest, but I'm not sure if foreigners are allowed there, as it's a naval base.

Previous poster is right, Dalian is a lot of beaches and squares. I really liked Bangchui Island, which is a bit outside of Dalian and has a nicer environment than some of the city beaches. You absolutely HAVE to eat seafood while you are there. Take a look at my travel notes on Dalian for names and addresses of restaurants.

Travel Tips for Dalian

Street Hawkers.

There are many street hawkers around. Many sell barbequed "yang rou chuan" (mutton skewers). The scene such as this in the picture is very common at places where there are many shoppers. These hawkers usually start setting up their "stalls" in the late afternoon.

There will be many stalls to choose from. Each skewers cost about RMB1 on the average. Simply order a few and season with some chilli sauce, some sweet sauce, and some sesame seeds. Quite tasty...

Xinghai Square

This huge square can be observed from the plane when aproaching Dalian.

It has an oval form with a star in the centre.

Interesting place for a walk, although when we visited the city, there was a beer festival taking place there and the square was close for normal visitors...

Friendship Square

Friendship Square is one of many squares in Dalian. It is located a couple of blocks west of Zhongshan Square. At the center of the square sits something that looks very similar to the Spaceship Earth structure at the Epcot Center in Walt Disney World, although smaller. It looks like a golf ball. A great photo opportunity here.
