Xinghai Square
by Skripa
The Xinghai Square was built in 1997 in honor of return Hong Kong to China. . It is located in central part of a bay Xinghai and occupies the territory in 600 thousands sq. meters. It is the largest square in Dalian.
In the center of the square you can see a Huabiao pillar with a bas-relief, symbolizing China. Its height is 19,97 meters, the diameter is 1,997 meters. These numerals remind of the year 1997 when Hong Kong was recovered to China. On a pillar is sliced the Dragon, in its base are sliced 8 dragons. All dragons symbolize the development of Chinese nation (descendants of a dragon). On a platform that surrounds the monument were dislodged out traditional symbols of a Chinese horoscope (12 animals). Find your birth year, get up on it and think of a desire. It will come true one day.
In the other side of a Xinghai Square is located another one monument. Itýs a gigantic white-stoned revealing book. It was erected in honor of a hundred-year-old Dalian and it symbolizes all historical events of Dalian.

A clean, modern city that is tearing down everything old and rebuilding. The city is only about 100 years old. Strong Russian and Japanese influences due to the previous occupations. They advertize them selves as having great beaches - not what we think of as great beaches, most are fine rock at best and some pebbles.
People are friendly and just starting to get use to the influex of foreigners.
They still have little patience with your attempts at bad Chinese, so I found sometimes it was better to use hand signals and a dictionary if it was important and not just the polite remarks like thank you (shay, shay)
Take a camera and take your pics the first month you are there, as what seemed unique at the beginning becomes routine and you don't even see it with the same eyes.
