A few questions from an American who just moved here..

by KTMW

1. Does Shenyang have some type of subway or railway system for getting around the city? If not, is it supposed to get one sometime in the future? When, if so?

2. Is there anywhere on the north side of the city to buy "foreign" type groceries like block cheese (as opposed to the fake slice cheese found in all the grocery stores) or tortilla shells or anything like that?

3. Is there anywhere in Shenyang to find Mexican food either in a restaurant or grocery store?

Please answer even if you can only answer one of the questions! I appreciate any help!

I am not from Shenyang and I have been away from China for quite a long time. I don't think there is subway in Shenyang, but there are plenty of buses. When I was in China seven years ago I had never seen tortilla shell or anything like that. I don't think you can find Mexican food there. McDonald's or KFC maybe. (As I said at the begining I have been away from CHina for a while and my information may not be accurate).

Ok I found some answers to my questions apart from this site, so I thought I'd answer for anyone else's future reference...
There is a railway system being built and maybe already running in some areas...? We saw part of it anyways, and the taxi drivers seem to think it will be done in 2008.
We haven't found foreign type foods on the northern side yet, but did find block cheeses and some other foreign type foods on the south side at the big Carrefour down there as well as at a little grocery store near where the more wealthy foreigners live. I believe the previous poster mentioned that place - don't remember what it is called.
Haven't found Mexican food yet, but I'll search 'til it's found or make it myself!
Thanks for the replies.

Ok, Yangshu - you said the metro runs to expo garden right? Where does it begin? I'm guessing it's an east/west route and not a north/south route; am I right?

not the metro, just comman train. you can take it in bei zhan (north station), and it's charged 3 yuan.

Ok, another question: Where are some good places in and around Shenyang to find a good selection of English books to buy? Is there any libraries with an English section?

Thanks!

Try the two Wallmark stores in the grocery section. When I was there last month (Aug 2006) they did have an international food section.

One Wallmart is located opposite South Train Station and the other near the Imperial Palace area.

regarding imported food stuff, go to Metro in tiaxi. Was there just last week, they now have coconut to blackcurrent tea & equal sweeterners :)
fyi, to buy anything from Metro, you gota be a member, just register at the counter, they take your pix with their webcam, give you an instant card, buy your stuff by producing your card, bring your own carrier or buy small large carriers at 30/50cents respectively :)

zhongshan park

by yangshu

it's very beautiful downtown park built by japanese in 1910s. after anti-japan war, it was changed into zhongshan park as many city's.

it is a central place in the city. many people gather here for walking, exercising, singing and giving speech.
