We had 4 nights here in October. Very impressed with the modernization - I was expecting everything to be a lot more rundown. We had a twin room with bathroom and it was huge. Pity we only had clean towels the first day though. Food not great, didn't eat there unless we had to. Staff very helpful & did two tours through them. Handy to railway station, but quite a hike to the other sights.
Unique Quality: Great atmosphere and very nice outdoor area for meals, movies.
Directions: Very close to the city wall and railway station
We made reservations in advance from Beijing, as part of YHC so we were met at the train station by Seven Sages staffer Song, who got up very early and then had to wait more than an hour because the train was late! She is very energetic and will ensure that your stay is pleasant. We chose a private double with private bath for Y120, about US$16. The room was nice and the bathroom modernized with western toilet. It is within the city walls, with a store right around the corner. It is within walking distance of the Drum and Bell Towers, Muslim Quarter, Train Station, China Post, Bank of China. You can go to Terra Cotta Warriors on tour through them or independently by bus. Dorm rooms are much cheaper. We met people who styed in them and said they were nice enough for us$5.
Unique Quality: It is directly adjacent to the 7th Army Reception museum, as it was a military headquarters during the revolution. Seven Sages is a former civilian home, with nice courtyards, moon gates, plants, etc. The bar and restaurant are good. Internet access for nominal fee, DVD room, etc. It was persimmon season, so they had them free for you to enjoy.
The common courtyard area at the restaurant area is perfect for meeting fellow travelers.
