I hope to go from Xian to Huangshan Mountains. Any trains take that route? What migt be fare? schedule?
As far as I know you can definitely take the train to Huashang. There should be quite a few during the day. I think there is one leaving as early as 7:30am. It should take approx 1.5 - 2hrs by train. Shouldn't cost more than 30RMB/person. It If you take a bus (from the train station), they leave almost every hour and maybe 2.5 hrs.
It's expensive to shop at the shopping centres, shop in the streets, in those shops you can bargain and can usually find what you're looking for there. The exception is electronics. Get them at the shopping centres, there's a warranty so at least you have a guarantee for quality.
I cannot remember the name, but I think it was mentioned in some guide like lonely planet etc. It is more of a cafe than a restaurant. Inside you can learn to use a potter's wheel and make your own vases etc. I failed miserably but it sure was a lot of fun. I think we had sodas, 7up or diet coke, delicious. Avoid finger food since your hands will be all cruddy with clay.
The BanPo Neolithic Village (banpo yizhi)is six kilometers east of Xi'an. This excavated site of a village dates back to 4500 BC and was discovered in 1953. The village during this period was called Yangshao and 45 houses, 6 pottery kilns, 200 storage pits, 250 adult's tombs and children's burial jars, 10,000 tools and utensils were unearthed. The distinct culture of these villagers was known as Yangshao culture. The most interesting aspect of this is that Yangshao culture was very matrifocal. There are more female tombs and graves here than male, and the women's graves contain more objects and valuables than their male counterparts do.
One of the fine Buddhist sites that remains in the city centre. The Small Goose Pagoda, build in 707 A.D., originally had 15-storey, but the top two storeys collapsed in an earthquake in 1555. Visitors can climb to the top of the pagoda through interior staircase where there is a sweeping view of Xian.
Walk the walls of the city, great for photos.
The Ming Dynasty Wall
This was built between 1374 and 1378 during the reign of Emperor Hongwu. It is a castle-like construction very typical of all China’s ancient city walls. It is a grand and impressive structure from a feudal society which shows the engineering skills of ancient China. It is 14 kilometres long and 12 metres high. The wall is about 18 metres wide at its base. The wall has towers at the four gates and corners and it formed a strong defence for the city inside.
