Beijing to Xi'an to the silk road

by pegggeee

Hi all,

I'm taking a tour of the silk road starting from Beijing. Is it more advisable to take a train or flight into Xian? My main concern is 1) SAFETY 2) COST. Thanks! :)

Hi! This trip sounds exciting. We did a 15 day tour in March that included Beijing, Xian, Suzhou, Shanghi, etc. Our trip included 2 flights on Eastern China Airlines and they were great. The flight to Xian from Beijing was 2 hours, so you would be looking at approx. 12-15 to drive it. My suggestion would be to fly and spend more time in an around the beautiful city of Xian, eg. city wall and Terra Cotta Warriors. Enjoy your trip. Wayne B. Canada

Travel Tips for Xi'an

Monks

by solopes

Be aware that, like everywhere else, temples are praying sites, and, despite their old and exotic look, they may keep being used for their religious purposes. That is the case of the Wild Goose Pagoda, where we tried to do not disturb the praying monks, but… only their great concentration helped us.

VT now allows the inclusion of video. As son as I edit iy, I will be able to add the interesting waving sound of the prayers. It’s a promise!

Taxi

by walterwu

On arrival at Xi'an domestic airport, looked around for a Taxi and couldn't locate even a single taxi.

Ended up paying 110RMB for a private taxi to take us to City Centre. On the way to the carpark at the airport, noticed all the taxis were waiting at the departure building (yes, departure building - not level) next block.

Why are all the taxis waiting at the departure building, I have no idea.

Anyway, within the City, a taxi by meter should not cost more than 10RMB.

On another day, tried to bargain down a single trip from Terracotta Warriors back to City at 40RMB. No go. The taxi driver politely pointed to the area to take the public bus (Big Green 306 Bus).

No problem getting a taxi to Banpo village at 30RMB. Should have bargain down further. Took a bus back to ChangLe XiLu.

Going to train station by taxi. Make a mistake by waiting for a taxi on the South Main Street. Was advised by locals to hail a cab on the North Main Street (i.e. North of Bell Tower) during the evening rush hours.

Terra Cotta Warriors

by FreeCloud

As a part of the Mausoleum complex of the first Chinese emperor, terra cotta warriors, together with the whole compound, is on UNESCO World Heritage list. See website for details: http://whc.unesco.org/sites/441.htm

The mosque

It's quite a surprise this building. Everything looks... Chinese, in Ming style. Without a warning, no one could imagine this site as a Muslim temple. A good exercise is to walk around, searching for signs that confirm the nature of the religious practices in place. And, discreet, they are there: In a shadowed room, the carpets oriented to Mecca wait for the prayers, and in the garden, some decorations are a Chinese interpretation of Arab decoration.

Funny!

WILD GOOSE TEMPLE............

by viajeromaga

WILD GOOSE TEMPLE......... Increible monument from the Tang dinasty. You must go to the top to see a great view of the city of Xian. By the way, if you are single and reach the top make sure you rub the belly of Budda and he will bring you the love of your life. (THAT IS WHAT THE CHINESE TELL YOU TO DO)
