Beijing to Xi-an travel: whats best

by soundchaseruk

Hi I am travelling to China next year for the first time and may fly in to Beijing but I want to travel to Xi-an. Is the 17hr train journey the best way to get there ? From Xi-an I will travel south so wonder if I can fly to Shenzen from Xi-an and is it expensive?

Is coming to China on the NAtional Holiday week in October going to be more expensive or too busy ? I will have two weeks only and thought this would be a good time to travel. Any thoughts ?

It's definitely not a 17-hour train ride from Beijing to Xi'an, whoever told you that? The fastest is 11.5 hours on the nice comfy Z train, and not too much longer on the T trains.
Yes, you can definitely fly to Shenzhen from Xi'an.
Yes, it'll definitely be more expensive to visit Xi'an (or most of any other places in China) in the 1st week of October, and Xi'an will be very busy too.

don't know whether you have made the trip already but here's our experience with 2 kids in toll. we travel via soft sleeper train Z19 from Beijing and arrived early at Xian. The train was first-class and we slept throughout the trip. But it's quite costly though....I would say that the overall experience was incredible. The kids enjoyed the train ride.

what type of cost was it please?

Thats about £21 which isn't bad but is that price for all of you or just one ? Trying to weigh up the choices of internal flight costs and train times etc is trcky. I want the easiest, cheapest way to travel. Train travel has to be interesting as long as it doesn't take too long. Is it easy to get a tcket on arrival at beijing airport or does one have to book in advance ?

Beijing--Xi'an Z train soft sleeper is actually 417/400 RMB for each lower/upper bunk, not 317 RMB.

That's strange, I've bought this route many times and soft sleeper has always been 400/417 RMB, no less.

No, the price won't be different. The train is the same; the distance is the same. I should also clarify that I've bought both Beijing--Xi'an and Xi'an--Beijing before.

Travel Tips for Xi'an

Explore the City

by Radiomom

We decided to see some of the city within the walls on our morning "off" in Xi'an. We took a cab to just inside the wall, and immediately took off along a side street. It became quite obvious this was an Art district -- most all of the shops sold painting supplies - brushes, papers and the like, and there were several wonderful art galleries we visited. There was also the gate to a beautiful school (?) I'm guessing it was an art institute. There was a guard at the gate who told us the school was closed (for the weekend? for the semester?). I'll have to hit the library to see if I can identify it.

(More text and pictures will be added to this tip!)

Restaurant on the way to the warriors

by albaaust about Don't know but look at location

Our guide took us to this huge restaurant on the way back from visiting the warriors. It was next to a silk factory and this pyramid. (see photo).

It was obvious this is a favourite haunt for guides as we were left while they went elsewhere.

We were given a set menu of food. Usual stuff soup, vegetable dish, chicken dish, rice and noodles. The noodles were made on the spot and were quite delcious. The rest of it was bland for our tastes.

Cost 120 Yuan for both of us. Too much!! If your driver suggests this place try and avoid!!

Biking

by dutchboycalledjan

We enjoyed biking the city walls. 40 yuan for 100 minutes. It wasn't possible to tour the city, as the Northern Gate is closed for repairs and we were forbidden to leave the wall with our bikes. Besides, the suffocating hot air - not a problem when you're riding, but when you stop ... - made us come back.

The Terracotta Army

by Ash59

Not all the warriors were made of terracotta. The chariot and horses shown in this picture were made of bronze. We were told that it was found in a completely smashed up state and that it was glued back together, just like a huge 3D puzzle

Kill The Goose

by walterwu

Nothing special about the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Lots of computer shops and internet cafe along the road leading to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.

The Small Wild Goose Pagoda is a total disappointment. You can see a replica inside the South City wall for free.
