1st time visitor to Xian

by micmik

Planning a trip to Xian with a couple of friends in early Apr:
- Expected weather in early Apr
- Recommended "hole in the wall" local food
- Any designer boutique hotel in a good location (presumably one should stay near the Bell Tower, eg Hyatt?)

I am sorry that this answer is incomplete but there are a number of unique places in Xian - hopefully if interested your hotel or travel guide will point you in the right direction

The restaurants I am thinking of are operated by Chinese Muslims and specialise in mutton / lamb dishes

Our main course started with an empty bowl and a small loaf that could have been used to repair the Great Wall, such was its texture.

We spent the first 10 minutes drinking tea and discussing our day while crumbling the 'rock-loaf' into the empty bowls - once done the waiter brought a large steaming bowl of lamb stew which we spooned onto the bread crumbs in the bowl - delicious and quite unique

This style of eating is popular in Xian and you should try this authentic experience

I seen to remember at staying at a very nice hotel that was almost beside the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, but can't remember what it was called.

I stayed at the Xi'an Fukai Hotel for about $40, including breakfast. It was about 2 blocks from the Bell Tower. my page has contact info if you are interested.

I second the nomination for the old Muslim Quarter for good food. Walk the street & market, immediately north and west of Drum Tower.

Well, there's a Walker Boutique Hotel in Xi'an, but it's located south of the city walls so the location doesn't seem too interesting.
Weather should be around 8-20 degrees Celsius, no rain.

What do you mean, "hole in the wall" food? There is a food hall in the big shopping centre which does have a stall where fresh noodles are made. Also we stayed at the Bell Hotel which wasn't a boutique hotel in the strictest sense but it was in a great location.

I stayed at the Bell tower hotel which I found great, and in a wonderful position.

For food, you have yo go eat in the muslim area. The street food there is awesome and really tasty and also cheap.

Travel Tips for Xi'an

City Wall

by nepalgoods

Xian is one of the very few cities in China, where the city wall is still in very good condition. 12km of wall surround the city, which has been once the biggest city of the world. At a time (around 1200), when Cologne had about 30000 inhabitants and New York did not yet exist, Xian had 1.000.000 people.

Airport bus to Xi'An city

by maywongkm

Cheaper option to the city (25yuan, approx. 1hour). Can't miss it, as the buses are just right outside the airport. We told the bus conductors where we wanted to go, and they directed us to the correct bus, and where we ought to alight.

We took the bus in which its last stop is at the Melody Hotel (West street), very near the Bell Tower. Once down from the bus, be skeptical of the taxi drivers who tries to rip off newcomers to the city.

Mt Huashan Night hike

by nmdtraveller

Catching the sunrise at Mt Huashan is awesome
Biking on the walls is cool
The bar street is cheap and pretty cozy
The food is excellent if you know where to look
Biking around the city is a great way to get a feel for the place
Tang Paradise is very good
Tang dinner show is well worth it
Muslim quarter pretty unique

Chinese dancing in the Bell Tower

by kentishgirl

This was cool, totally unexpected!! We went into the tower and upstairs there were chairs being set out. We sat down and soon enough we were joined with heaps of other people, then the dancers and musicians came onto the stage - they were brilliant!!

Ah the colours, the music - superb.

The Tang Dynasty Show

by mikelisaanna

The Tang Dynasty show is a theatrical show performed in a large dinner theater that features music and dances with a historical Tang Dynasty theme (the Tang Dynasty was the height of Xi'an's power and wealth). The costumes are beautiful and the dances well performed. Although it is clearly targeted at tourists (the audience was 80% non-Chinese), it was still fun to see, especially for our daughter Anna.

Before the show starts, they serve you a three course meal that features a variety of dumplings (about 15 types), as well as soup and drinks. The food was filling, and the Tsingtao beer was cold, which made Mike happy.
