Cheap no frills hotel, comfy and clean. Staff were extremely helpful and there is a 24hr restaurant next door. One of the city walls Wenchange Gate is only 5mins walk away.

Location is not great, had to travel by bus and then metro to various places.

I highly recommend that you live within the Bell/Tower area which is off the metro line, that way you can conveniently access all the tourist places easily. Travelling by bus and then metro etc can be a mission if you don't speak putonghua.

    Unique Quality: Value for money

Good Youth Hostel in Xi'an

by meliaz

Any recommendations for a good youth hostel in Xi'an? I might be visiting in Dec, sometime end of December so am looking for a convenient place to stay. Understand there are some pretty good youth hostel - such as Han Tang Inn, University Hostel, Xiangzimen Hostel etc.

Would very much appreciate some advice. Thanks.

PS: As it is in winter, please help recommend a hostel with good heating.

I went to Xi'an last year, I stayed @ Shuyuan Youth Hostel. No complaints on my stay there. Dorm rooms are in the basement, restrooms and shower rooms are on the 1st floor. It's near the entrance of city walls and near the bus station to the tourist spots. Shower rooms and restrooms are clean.

Yeah, that's right, Shuyuan Youth Hostel is also a nice hostel with good location.

Yes, I had a great stay at SHUYUAN Hostel, too. It is situated right at the NanMen - the South Gate of the City Wall. Take Bus No. 603 from the railwaystation to the South Gate. Walk to the right side of the Gate, just before passing through the Wall take the last alley on the right side - it is a small path only for one car at a time. Less than 50 meters and you will find this great place.
Everything is in an traditional style, really cute. They also offer a nice cuisine for afordable prices, even though I always prefer the streetkitchens throughout the Muslim Quarter.
The location is just perfect, when you get out of the Hotel doors you run right into the Great City Wall! You can not get any closer with your bed!
It is only a five to ten minutes walk to the Bell tower, the center of the old city.
Enjoy your stay!

Travel Tips for Xi'an

XIAN
Xian, formerly called...

by SirRichard

XIAN
Xian, formerly called Chang An, is the capital of Shanxi Province and the biggest city in northwest China. With a history of over 3000 years, Xian served as China's earliest capital for eleven dynasties, including the Western Zhou, the Qin, the Western Han, the Sui and the Tang dynasties, for a period of 1180 years, longer than any other. It was also the starting point of the renowed Silk Road, the main trade route between China, central Asia and Europe.

Taxis between 3 and 4pm

by Green_Frog

You'll be told and see signs at the hostels that there are no taxis between 3 to 4pm as this is the changeover for drivers - their dinner breaks. So if you need to catch a train, flight etc you need to go super early apparently. Well we found a taxi at 3.30pm and although it was a little difficult to find out - with our stunning blonde daughter on the corner flagging them down, how could they resist = we got a taxi to take us to the train station on time : )

Musical fountain at Big Wild Goose Pagoda (Dayanda

by tistra

I really recommend you to watch musical fountain here. Dayanta at night is so beautiful. The musical fountain begins at 9 p.m. and it's only 10 mins (anyway please ask more info at hotel again because I don't know that it will begin at 9 p.m. everyday or not) Around dayanda has many shops that you can take time to walk around. So can come here 7-8 pm. It's free.

Imperial Dumpling Banquet

by Mairo21

When eating here, we were served a total of 18 different dumplings. All different in shapes, all different tastes...and that was just a sample. When I took a look at their menu, there were so much more that we didn't have the opportunity to try even half of the selection. If you love dumplings, come to this famed Xi'an restaurant that has been in business since 1936.

The Man

by muddybok

Ying Zheng, better-known as Qin Shihuang (246 - 221 BC) is the first emperor in China history and founder of the Qin Dynasty.

Although he has been honored as a remarkable emperor (who unite the nations) and also denounced as a tyrant in China’s history. The construction of Great Walls and building of other public works were accomplished at massive cost of wealth and human life.

Prior to Ying Zheng united the nations, the Chinese are at war all the time. The death, poverty and fear are always crept into commoners' lives. They will never know they can live past tonight and they good crops will be able to harvest. Just too many uncertainties, but the first emperor set everything straight, but live still not easy.
