Lodging Options

by miaka_yuuki

Can someone suggest a lodging option on a budget for somewhere within or close to the city walls?

If you go to Xian pass by the Railwaystation quarter with all these hairdressershops....

For a nice and cheap place I would recommend the CHUYUAN Hostel Phone: (29)-7287721. It is situated right at the NanMen - the South Gate of the City Wall. Take Bus No. 603 from the railwaystation to the South Gate. Walk to the right side of the Gate, just before passing through the Wall take the last alley on the right side - it is a small path only for one car at a time. Less than 50 meters and you will find this great place.
Everything is in an old traditional retro-style, really cute. Employees are very young and helpful. They are all dressed in traditional clothes which fit to the architecture of the building.
They are also quite flexible with prices - a double room cost us 100 yuan.
They also offer a nice cuisine for afordable prices, even though I always prefer the streetkitchens throughout the Muslim Quarter.
The location is just perfect, when you get out of the Hotel doors you run right into the Great City Wall! You can not get any closer with your bed to this great wall!
It is only a five to ten minutes walk to the Bell tower, the center of the old city.
Enjoy your stay!

The bell tower hostel is right in the middle of the centre (near, strangely enough the bell tower). If you contact them they'll pick you up at the train station. It is really nice and beds are as cheap as you can get them i think (around 30 rmb if my memory serves me well, but it could easily be cheaper. Stayed in a few places after that so don't quote me on this...;-) )It depends on the size of the dorm.

Make sure you check on the bell tower HOSTEL (f.e. by checking a hostel site)and not the hotel that goes by the same namw

Travel Tips for Xi'an

Cool world-Zhuque National Forest Park

by jasmine_ding

I spent my last day of 2007 in a uncommon way,. Climbing a mountain in a chilly winter day. It’s a forest park in Qinlin Mountains, 74 km west of Xi’an. The space of the park is over 2600 ha. Based on different views, the park is made of five areas, including 3100 meter height peak, pastures, waterfalls, streams and red birch woods. It’s better to visit the park in spring, summer and fall. It’s one of the most popular resorts around Xi’an, because it’s much cooler and quiet. People can stay in the park and search every spot in 2 days.

Though it’s not a good season to visit the park, I enjoyed the views I saw, blue sky, frozen waterfalls, snow covered paths and flying hawks.

Anytime, the temperature here is at least 5 degrees lower than of Xi’an. So, bringing an extra coat and a pot of hot coffee are good idea, otherwise you’ll catch a cold like me did.

Cheap and yummy

by lindyz about Kai Yuan Food Hall

On the highest floor of the Kai Yuan Mall I think is their Food Hall with an abundance of choices in cheap local food, plus a few western options like Pizza. A Huge plate of food will have average price of about 6rmb - this is soooooo cheap!

Big Goose Pagoda

by Blatherwick

The Great Wild Goose Pagoda was built in 652 and back then had five stories. The pagoda was built to store sutras and figurines of Buddha, that were brought to China by the Buddhist translator and traveller Xuanzang.

In the beginning of 8th century under the ruling of Empress Wu Zetian five more storeys were added to the pagoda. Sadly wars on later times damaged the pagoda reducing its height to current seven storeys. It stands 64 meters tall and from the top it offers a great view over the city of Xi'an.

The Bell Tower

by Paul2001

The Bell Tower in Xian is perhaps my favourite of the many such structures that I visited in China. This probably because I thought that it was the most picturesque and for the performance that was held inside during my visit.
The Bell Tower was originally built in 1384 but was then moved to its present location in 1582. It has been restored many times since. The Bell Tower has an interesting setting on top of a blue brick platform in the middle of a huge traffic circle. The contrast between this centuries old building and the surrounding modern glass and steel structures is fascinating. The interior of the Drum Tower has been turned into a performance hall and a museum exhibited old bells and instruments. The performances are held about every two or three hours. They include some traditional dancing and musicians in traditional costume. I thought that it was quite good but I was disappointed that the dancer only performed for one song. In fact she had changed into her modern street clothes and left the tower before the others had finished.
To get a ticket for the Bell Tower, you have to go underneath the traffic circle and buy the ticket at a kiosk almost directly beneath the tower.

Muslim Quarters

by muddybok

The Muslim Quarters feature a mix of Chinese and Islamic cultures where small alleyways have been turned into marketplaces. I visited Muslim Quarter at night and get to help my Muslim friends in bargaining for songkok purchase.

Within the Muslim Quarter, there is one huge, beautiful mosque, called the Xi'an Great Mosque. Since my visit is way too late in the night, I got to give it a miss. But walking around the wall surrounding the mosque, I can tell you the size of it is definitely huge!!
