Suzhou train to Xian
by soundchaseruk
I have posted many questions recently as i am trying to work out my travel arrangements for next year. I have almost got a plan now (thank goodness) and would like to know how long, and the cost of a train from Suzhou or Shanghai to Xian ?
I will be staying in Suzhou so would prefer to start the journey then. i have read much about the trains standards in China so wondered if they are good on this route ?
is it bettre to carry your own food and water for hygeine reasons ?

May I suggest that you check out from the website www. travelchinaguide.com/china trains. From here you will be able to find out the time taken and the schedule of the trains as well as the fares. If, for example, you can find a train that starts from Suzhou at 9.00 am you can have breakfast before you leave and if the train were to reach there at lunch time you will be able to take your lunch without the need to bring food into the train. Water is a must to bring along for travellers. So it is good to check out the train schedule and the fares. Cheers.

Wonderful site. I now have some times and fares to choose from.
I then thought about getting from Lishui to Shenzen by train. it will take a day but I can enjoy the scenery but so far I can't find a route by train. can you help again ?
I really appreciate your time.

Now that you are familiar with the site, go back to it. Go down to the page and check out by way of via Shanghai, Hangzhou, Guangzhou or other big cities train hubs (it can be Ningbo, or Xiamen etc) to your preferred destination Shenzen. Cheers.

there is no train available from shanghai/zhejiang.
it's better to take the sleeper on train T138 or T116 from suzhou which arrives in xi'an the next day morning.
it's not recommended for dining on the train, you may have your dinner earlier before your boarding and get some food/drink with you on the train, only a night.

Interesting comment about Lishui. Why do you say that? it looks to be a nice town in the mountains

Travel Tips for Xi'an
Packing List

The Great Mosque of Xian. Located at Huajue Lane, the mosque in Xi'an possesses much Chinese tradition in both its design and its artistic outlook. Different from the style peculiar to Islamic mosques, this mosque also has characteristics of Chinese pavilions, with painted beams and engraved ridgepoles.
First!
by John195123 about Park Qin
Supposedly this is one of the first places named after Emperor Qin... or something like that. It's a dark, probably occasionally smoky basement bar that sees a lot of foreigners, has live music, and discounts on drinks for those staying at the Shuyuan Youth Hostel, which is just above the bar... in fact you can access the bar via a steep, narrow staircase in the courtyard of the Shuyuan.
The drinks are relatively expensive, as most bars with imported liquors are here, but it's a nice place to hang out if that's your thing. They also have live music and a pool table.

Muslim Quarter- Great Mosque
by John195123
You can access the Great Mosque from the vendor street that begins by the drum tower, via a small alley that comes off a street lined with small restaurants...
It doesn't feel like a mosque, built in a style more akin to Buddhist temples- very Chinese in the rooftops, doorways and "pagoda" style minaret... but it's a peaceful respite from the streets of glitz and overpriced souvenirs, a good place to sit a while and read about the Muslim Quarter or the mosque's history.
Entry is 15 yuan in the low season and 30 yuan in the high season (I believe, Feb. '08).
Terracotta Army
by ivinlau
The terracotta army is not to be missed during your trip to Xi'an. The ancient army of Qin Shi Huang's army and horses.
Xi'an, used to be known as Chang'An which means (in mandarin) "everlasting safety city". And that probably explain why the 1st emperor of China build his grave in Xi'an.
Try the street food - If you are game!
by K.Knight
I must say that the one thing that I never saw anywhere in all my time in China was a food inspector from the health department!
Food stalls are everywhere in China, and Xian is no exception. Anne and I frequented these stalls on a regular basis to stock up on bottles of water and, Anne’s favorite, peach juice.
Although some of the street food looked very nice, and the prices were even nicer, I kept thinking of those adverts on television about the traveler holed up in a dingy hospital somewhere with food poisoning. (And the thought of Anne’s voice ringing in my ears for years to come, “I TOLD YOU SO!”)
You see, when I was in Zimbabwe I got salmonella poisoning, when I was in Uganda I got food poisoning, when I was in……the list could go on…just ask Anne LOL:))
