Travel Tips for Xi'an

Go to the Tang Dynasty Show...

by JohnNewton

Go to the Tang Dynasty Show and be sure to have the dumpling dinner. The show is pretty commercial, but well done and professionally acted.

The Shaanxi symphony orchestra is excellent.
Eat the Muslim mutton dinner at the Bell Tower plaza

Day trip to Hua Shan

by susanpingu

Tours to Hua Shan are popular. You can either go there yourself or join a tour. Many hotels/hostels can sign you up for the Hua Shan tour (310 yuan incl. bus transportation, cable ride and admission).
On arrival at the base of Hua Shan, they usher you into a restaurant for lunch (you pay) and then a Chinese traditional shop selling Hua Shan medicinal herbs.

They usually give you about 5 hours on the mountain. My hike from the upper cable station to West and North peaks, and back to the cable station took about 4 hours (including lots of rest).

You won't have time do do the South Peak, near where those thrilling plank paths on the side of the cliffs are located. To do this section, you will need to stay overnight on Hua Shan.

Unfortunately for me, my batteries ran out and I missed taking the most crucial photo of all - a view of the West Peak from the viewpoint of the North Peak.

Traditional dance and music

by cinthya_in_victoria

We were taken to a Chinese traditional dance and music show in a beautiful theatre.
After eating Chinese ravioli, beer and other exotic food, the show started with actors and actrecess traditionaly dressed dancing traditional music. There were acrobats, their performance left us with our mouths wide open! It finished after one hour and a half and the cost was 400 yuan. It was one of the most beautiful shows I've ever seen for sure. Outside the theatre some vendors followed us selling tablecloths, they were beautiful so, bargain, bargain, bargain!!

Great experience...

Right beside the Drum Tower begin the Muslim quarters.

This place is a myriad of interesting handicraft shops, muslim restaurants and vendors and narrow streets where you can spend much much time walking and walking.

It definitely worths an entire morning or afternoon. I would suggest the afternoon, so that you can choose some street vendor or nice muslim restaurant for dinner after spending your energies walking.

Daily flag raising ceremony

by K.Knight

A fellow traveler asked me, “What do you think the major industry is in China?” to which I replied, “Flag making!”

It is amazing to see the number of flags that fly from anything that closely resembles a flagpole! If it is straight, it is a flagpole in China.

Children play with the national flag, every boat on the rivers fly the flag, T-shirts have the flag printed on them…the list goes on.

Every day at sunset you can hear the national anthem playing very loudly over loudspeakers around the main square of Xian. Soldiers then appear in formation and march to the flag pole. Guards take up their position, the tourists and crowds are kept at bay and a team of immaculately dressed soldiers, with white gloves, proceed to unfurl the national colors and hurl them up the flagpole!
