Train from Beijing to Xi'an is RMB270 for a hard sleeper and probably half that for a hard seat. It takes 16 hours to get there.
Xi'an is generally quite accessible from other provinces by train or bus.
The plans is an option too but i didn't look into it at the time.
Cabs here different from the 1.20, 1.60 and 2.00 in Beijing are only 1.40 across the board and because distances are generally much less than in Beijing, it is very cheap to get around!

Great Mosque
by darthmilmo
The garden inside the compound of the Great Mosque at Xian is unique. The stroll through the several compounds leading to the Great Mosque is worth the time. There is a central building that stands out with its three stories (see travelogue pics). The architecture and design found at Xian's Great Mosque offer a unique chance to see a blend on how the traditional Chinese and Islam culture mixed by the many merchants brought about by the Silk Route.
