Flying Kite
Between the Bell Tower & Drum Tower is a lovely mall where a number of locals/tourists flies the kites (chained). The area is windy and the kites takes off without difficulty.
Cost of a set of "kite-lets" is about 2RMB.

Have one day to visit Terra cotta army, need tour guide
to pick up and return to airport. Arrive 22nd September.
Any members know of a good tour guide who may be available?
Thanks!
Visit www.chinatravelservice.com.you can do that here or in China. they provided me with a full itinerary from Beijing and whilst there on business. They are by far the best as whilst still a communist country they were the only people allowed to arrange travel and still have the best guides who can show you so much more. Chris
I have just the person you need....i'll email you his details.

A barbecue restaurant with American and Chinese buffet in a German setting.
The buffets (including different soups, salads, different rice and noodle preparations, shell fish, crab, shrimp, etc. and a dessert buffet) are à volonté. The waiters come around with skewers to serve the meat: chicken, chicken hart, different kinds of sausages, beaf, lamb, porc, etc. and serve you one piece of each at the time, keeping track of your servings by marking them on a receipt slip. The choice of meat is very large, but the taste and the way it is served is not optimal.
One fixed price including the barbecue, all buffets and soft drinks and juices à volonté.
Noisy atmosphere. The buffet was satisfactory but I'd rather skip the barbecue.
Another of the must-see stops on a China tour is the big Wild Goose Pagoda in Xi'an. It was built originally to house the first Buddist scriptures and artifacts brought to China from India. The grounds are immense, and part of ongoing restoration. Surrounding the Pagoda itself are other buildings, housing a temple and offices and some beautiful gardens for prayers or simple contemplation.
There are many pages by other VT'ers that contain all the details about this site, I found it a particularly welcoming, restful (although there was some restoration work occurring during our visit) and placed in a wonderful setting. There were places where you could sit and see nothing but the ancient trees and and blooming flowers, and others where the skyline of the modern city peeked over the lush greenery. There must have been great attention to feng shui paid in the situation and surroundings of this site. More than any of the places we visited in Beijing, there was a real spiritual feeling here.
Bell Tower
This 36m high tower marks the centre of the ancient city. It was built in 1384 by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang as a watch tower and was located next to the Drum Tower. It was moved to its present site in 1582 and restored in 1739. A bell, located in the north west corner at the base of the tower was struck to indicate the passing hours. Streets linking the tower to the main gates of the wall are named after them - North, East, South and West Streets. Originally vehicles could pass under the tower but traffic is now so heavy it is directed around it. Visitors can access the tower by the modern underpass built under it.
Drum Tower
The Drum Tower was initially built in 1380 during the reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty. It is a smaller building (34m high) and marks the boundary of the Muslim Quarter in Xi'an.
Unfortunately lack of time meant that I could only admire these buildings from the outside
This is a pic of the Belltower (see the bell?), sited in the exact center of the ancient Xi'An.
The Ancient town is a perfect square, with well-conserved walls still standing. The Belltower is in the middle of this square and foure street depart from here like a cross reaching four gates named, not so originally, North, South, East and West Gate.
The area is crowded with people and traffic is chaotic.
The tower is accessible and from above a nice view of the town is available.
