Xian Shanghai train
by trigger48
Thanks to the people who answered my question and suggested asking the hotel/hostel to help me book the ticket. But what I forgot to mention is that I will arrive in Xian on the morning of the 27th from Bejing and want/need to leave the same evening so I won't have a hotel in Xian to help me.I reach Bejing on the 24th August. Is it safe to leave booking trains till I arrive both for Bejing to Xian and Xian to Shanghai? Also those dates are not flexible. Any further advice please.

If you have to leave at same day then I'll recommend you take plane since you can book ticket online:

Ask the travel desk of Bell Tower IYH to help. You don't need to be staying there.

I also have question regarding xian shanghai train. How hard is it really to get train ticket from xian to shanghai? I'll be coming from Beijing, then I'll go to Xian. Then when I arrive at Xian, I plan to buy the train ticket to Shanghai ASAP. I'm going to stay in Xian only 3 or 4 days. IS it possible for me to get ticket to shanghai,a hard sleeper one?

Don't count on it. Tickets go on sale 10 days in advance and there's only 1 train that originates in Xi'an. I would advise getting someone to help pre-buy the ticket if at all possible.
Travel Tips for Xi'an
Photographic Equipments

You surely won’t forgive yourself if you travel China without a camera. I personally have ton of memory space, not to mention I have my notebook around because I needed it for my training in Beijing.
If you're a shuttle happy guy like me, you probably need to bring one of this photo storage (see 2nd picture) to store your high resolution photos. Why deprive yourself from clicking the shuttle?

After our lunch with George and our driver, he took us to the Muslim Quarters and the Great Mosque. Our itinery originally was to go to the Shanxxi Museum but apparently it was closed on a Monday. So, we went here instead, and I would thoroughly recommend spending a few hours here. The shopping was great, very cheap and some unusual items we did not see anywhere else in China. Im not too sure about the food, we saw some very unusual delicasies which, every time I asked what they were, I got the answer "you dont want to know!" One I did take a pic of was goats feet!!!
Muslim Quarters is very close to the Great Mosque, but not too sure of the exact address. Im sure your Hotel staff will be able to advise taxi drivers of where to go.
Bell Tower
by Blatherwick
The Bell Tower, is a stately traditional building, that marks the geographical center of the ancient capital. During the Ming Dynasty, Xian was an important military town in Northwest China, a fact that is reflected in the size and historic significance of its tower. The tower was built in 1384 by Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang as a way to dominate the surrounding countryside and provide early warning of attack by rival rulers.
Great City Wall
by walterwu
These extremely thick city wall are a wonder by itself. The city wall is constantly modified for vehicular traffic passthru.
The original gates to the city wall is the North, East, South and West Gate.
