Fine Art in hotel room
by dutchboycalledjan about Xi'an Fine Art Institute
In the main street of the Muslim center I was approach by a girl who invited me to visit the Xi'an Fine Art Institute to look at the pictures. It was in a room at the first floor of a small hotel. They were made by students and teachers at the institute. The teacher had donated them for free, to support the institute. Or so Summer told me. They were the mostly the classical stuff: characters, flowers, landscapes. On silk and paper. But they were cheaper than the art in the Folk Museum.
Summer told me she is now teaching in Kindergarten, as she had finished the school. There were some picture by her too, very classical four seasons. The take turns in approaching people.
I had read in the guide that these 'galleries' are often an hoax - and perhaps this was too - but in that case she sure was a hell of an actress and it was worth the performance. I bought a nice ' modern' one, a woman with a cat, a bit in the style of Corneille, and got a traditional for free. If you're looking for a good buy, this place seems to deliver. I got it for 100 yuan, fair enough
Sweet and sticky cake-Jinggao/Zenggao Cake
by jasmine_ding about Muslim Quarters
It differs from the other kind of Jinggao/Zenggao cake (small Jinggao/Zenggao cake) which is a small round cake and can be found every corner in Muslim Quarter. The material, shape and taste are totally different. I call it big Jinggao/Zenggao cake.
The snack bar is named "Lord of Jinggao of Southeast Asia". It is located in the cross of Ma Jia Shi Zi and Xi Yang Shi. It is on the corner, with a red banner, written "Lord of Jinggao of Southeast Asia", a funny brand.
Sorry, the pic is awful, there is too many steam above the barrel, so I couldn't take a good pic. It's the disgusting pic I have ever taken. Jinggao/Zenggao cake (big one) is made of sticky rice, dates, red beans and honey. It's delicious, fragrant and sweet. I enjoy eating it, and I'm sure most of people like it.
It is filled in a huge steel barrel. Every minute you will see a small queue in frone of the barrel. Every day, the little snack bar sells over 1 ton of it. The seller stops working before 5PM. So, it's impossible to get it in the evening.
Give seller 3 yuan, try it, you'll not disappointed.
Terracotta Warriors
by nepalgoods
The Terracotta Warriors are an absolute must! They are the guardians of the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang Di, the first emperor of China. About 2000 years old. Until today there have been thousands of them excavated. But the archaeologists are still expecting to find more. The tomb itselve is not yet excavated.
Ancient Cultural Street
by Willettsworld
This street, known as Shu Yuan Men (Arts Street), is located on the eastern side of the South Gate. It starts from the Museum of Forest of Stone Tablets at the Wechang Gate and ends at the Hua Pagoda of the Baoqing Temple. The street is nice to walk down because it contains over 200 arts and crafts shops and over 100 stalls some of which sell calligraphy brushes of all sizes, antiques, paintings, paper cuts, and jewels.
The quarter of the Hui
by socrates_07
In this part of Xi´An live the minority group of the Muslims, the Hui Chinese. You should eat dumplings there. And I had one of my best breakfast in China. What I ate? I don´t know.... but it was very delicious.
