Qin Li Hotel: Decent

Well, it's no 4 or 5 star hotel. It's small but is located conviently near the Bell Tower. The alley that goes to the hotel has 3 small restaurants which are quite good. The rooms are pretty plain with the standard amenities. The staff was friendly and very helpful. If you're looking for a relatively cheap but decent place to stay, I would recommend this hotel.

Great staff.

Xiangzimen Youth Hostel: How hostels should be

This friendly hostel is well located near to the South Gate inside the city wall (which actually runs outside the front of the building), so it's within walking distance to the main sights in Xi'an such as the Bell and Drum Towers and Forest of Stele Museum right in the heart of the old town. The staff here are very nice and welcoming and the place is very traditionally laid out. There's a huge common area with a bar, comfy seating and pool table where you can, drink, relax and eat some really good food. My room was really good with a nice double bed, TV but it was the bathroom that was the pièce de résistance as it was very large, new and very clean even though the water pressure in the shower started to play up and even broke the showerhead, but that was fixed for me. This place is just how hostels should be and was one of the best I've ever stayed in. Great stuff!

Entertainment Overview

As an international and modern tourist city, Xi'an boasts a good selection of bars, restaurants and other entertainment facilities. The city's large student population ensure that the night life here is more exciting than in many other Chinese cities. This city is a big hit with backpackers too, who add to the increasingly westernized atmosphere about the place at night. A good place to start the evening is in either Dad's Home Cooking or Mum's Home Cooking on Fenghe Lu. There are always lots of people hanging about in here and the food and beer is cheap. Ask in here about the latest hot spots in the city. The area around Dong Da Jie is also lively in the evenings. A couple of places worth checking out are Bar One Plus One and the House Disco. If you are still looking for more action you could also try the Fashion Bar on the same road. This place is actually pretty funky and the drinks here are good.

For those after something a little more upmarket, there are some nice hotel bars here. The top hotels in Xi'an cater well to foreign tourists and their drinking and eating habits! Try the bar in the Hyatt Regency Hotel or the pleasant cafe in the Bell Tower Hotel.

Qi Xian Hostel: Clean budget accomodation

Stayed over in 2005 winter. Nice quiet place off the main bustling streets. Clean rooms and toilets. They got a nice little puppy to guard the place too! Haha.

Nice people working. Mostly university students. Extremely friendly, and they can all drink very well!

Fu Run Hotel, Xi'an: New Boutique Hotel

This is a new hotel with modern decoration of ancient Terracotta Army arts in the main hall and corridor. If you prefer something modern in Xi'an, this might be a great choice for you. I paid RMB 199 per night.

Pro:

1) It is strategically located in the city center, walking distant to Wall (Yongning Gate), metro station, a bus-stop just right outside the building, nearby shopping malls, shops, and restaurants.

2) All their staffs are very friendly and helpful.

3) Inside the room, there is a 32 inch PC monitor, and wireless high speed internet.

4) Clean, modern, and new.

Con:

Nothing I can think of.

YMCA hotel: Its fun to stay at the YMCA

On first view the YMCA is a great hotel.

The receptionists speak passable english, the hotel is newly renovated, and it's off the main road (in a courtyard).

Also, if you ask you'll almost definately get a reduction - I got 20% during the spring festival.

Downside : the walls seem to be made of paper so if you have even slightly noisy neighbours then you won't get any sleep

It's lovely and clean, the rooms are comfortable. Breakfast is not included in the price but there's an excellent bakery just down the road.

Main inconvenience - the noise of the other guests (and it can be a major inconvenience as the chinese love to put the TV on full blast and then talk louder than the TV....)

A new International Youth...

A new International Youth Hostel opens last year, near South Gate of the City wall. The hostel in in a Qing couryard. You will see its ads at the exit of Xian Railway Station. Not too far from the Bell Tower, about 20 minutes walk.

About 300 metres west of the South Gate, inside the City wall.

NOT recommended: Xian Hotel....

NOT recommended: Xian Hotel. We made the reservation there under the guise that it was a three star hotel. Should've sprung the extra $30 or so for the Sheraton. The plus was that it was pretty central, walking distance sort of, 10-15 minutes from the center of town.
Probably around $70 a night or so. Can't remember. Go for the Sheraton instead, think Clinton did.

The plus was that it was pretty central, walking distance sort of, 10-15 minutes from the center of town. Rooms were very dark and walls in hallways were painted dark colors. Had TV's on the rooms showing Chinese Kung Fu movies etc. They do have a workout area, pool, sauna etc, but we never used it.

Again, I'm having big problem searching for hotels or hostels. As usual, most of the local hostel, hotels are only for local Chinese not for 'Aliens' as they claimed. But this time we are lucky to get a room for 3 for RMB60 but the boss said 'Hey don't mention you are foreigner'

My friend and I stayed at the...

My friend and I stayed at the Blue Sky. Rooms, at least back in '97, were cheap ($5 USD/person). Our accomodations were the best during our stay in mainland China. Included were 2 separate full-size beds, A/C, communal showers with warm water, TV, and hot water (for tea). Once you arrive at the train station, there will be many individuals attempting to get you to stay at their hotel. Take your time, don't feel pressured, because they'll be there or will come back! We stayed at the Blue Sky the first night, the second we crashed at a restaurant (see 'restaurant' for details).
$10 USD/night (We paid $5/person.)

Extremely popular little hotel because of its great location, friendly atmosphere and good service. It also has a very good restaurant. The Wuyi is often full so remember to book ahead.

Make sure the toilet is clean...

Make sure the toilet is clean and there are no maggots.
Pay for a nice toilet- it's worth it.

It is so rare to find a nice toilet in China- I dread my color memory.

Grand Noble Hotel: A Hotel with Style

I really liked my room in this hotel—modern furniture and an “open” floor plan that made the room look more spacious. The toilet and shower were behind frosted glass for privacy. (Not all the rooms were like this however.)

The lobby was comfortable, and had quiet live music the night we were there.
Giant fork and spoon sculptures marked the entrance to the dining room.
