sculpture in Xian

by LowellHill

I have a pcture from 2004 trip to Xian. It contains a boy on one knee on top of a pedastel constructed from stacked rocks. All is surrounded by a pool of water surronded by a concrete low wall, in the midst of dense greenery. The pool is filled with water lilys. I cannot find a replicate in guide books and cannot remember its locaton. Does anyone recognize it by descripton and can tell me where it is located?Lowell Hill

Having been to Xian several times, I wonder if you are talking about the Kneeling Boy Archer. Take a look, and scroll down to Number 7:

There is another one of a kneeling stable boy, but I do not find a photo of him. All of them are part of the Terra Cotta army of statuse found in Xian

The sculpture was in the city near one of the pagodas or museums. I'm sure it was not with the Terra Cotta group. If we are communicating, I'll try to scan the picture. Thanks for your reply. Lowell Hill

Well, I tried to find the "kneeling stable boy" which I know is there, but at least we have eliminated the kneeling boy archer. Here is a clearer photo of it (scroll down).

The statue that you are referring to, - is it not a replica of the Terra Cotta type of statue? The actual TC statues would not be on display in a park on a pedestal, but perhaps a replica of same.

I am assuming that this statue is in one of the many public parks in and around Xian. Perhaps you may recognize the surroundings in photos.

Not it yet. I have scanned a picture, but I can't find a way to inseert it in my answer. I suspect it has to go via internet, which I'm not set up to do. Do you have an e-mail where I could attach the picture? I appreciate all the time you are taking to help. My e-mail is l-hill3@illinois.edu.

Travel Tips for Xi'an

Buying your own personal terra cotta army

by SLLiew

After visiting the amazing archaelogical site of Shi Huang Ti (First Emperor of China), you may be thinking of wanting your own personal terra cotta army.

It is possible with a few US dollars for you will find being sold are the miniature size soldiers and horses as souvenir. There are different sizes, quality and price.

While where there it seems corny to buy such touristy cheap imitation, when back home, they will transform into priceless memories of a by-gone era of China early history. So do miss out in buying some or more.

The TANG DYNASTY Show

by szabolcs

The TANG DYNASTY Show
This is a real tourist-show but is still a very spectacular and elaborate one with dancing, traditional Chinese music and probably the most beautiful Chinese girls in town. A must-see. Nothing in particular - maybe shorts aren't such a good idea still.

Impressive Xi'an warriors

by dutchboycalledjan

We visited this as adviced in Lonely Planet: first the movie in the 360 degrees theater (standing), then hall 3, 2 and 1 and finally the museum (only the high lights). This is indeed the best way, as Pit 1 is the most spectacular.
Note: there is a separate window for tickets with concession (= cheaper) for students, children and elderly! the prices are printed on the window. This saved us two times 45 yuan.

Life in prehistoric China

by dutchboycalledjan

The Xi'an environment is very fertile, as the ground consists of loess (clay and sand deposit form the ice-age). So no wonder there were neolithical people living here. This museum shows the on the site excavations of a village: houses, parts of a moat, a cemetary etc. The exhibition has English texs and there is an interactive computer display with details (including the famous Chinese who visisted this place ;-)). We found the museum very interesting, altough not as spectacular as the terracota army. So first visit this - as we did - and then go to the terracotta army.

CONTINUE .... THE TERRACOTA...

CONTINUE .... THE TERRACOTA WARRIORS .....

Tomb figure and objects with molded and painted decorations continued to be made in the Han Dinasty (206 bc - 220 ad), these included houses and human figures. Bricks sometimes are decorated with scenses of everydayt animal and human activity.
