Dust Storms?

by MikeySoft

Does Xi'an experience similar dust storms like Beijing does? If so, when?

RE: Dust Storms?

by jasmine_ding

No, Xi'an is much better than Beijing. If dust storms happen 6 times in a whole spring in Beijing, you will meet once in Xi'an. And it's not as serious as in Beijing because there is no wind throughout years.
I live in Xi'an, I know it.

Travel Tips for Xi'an

I don´t know if I should call...

by socrates_07

I don´t know if I should call it as a 'cultural tip' because you won´t go Xi´An to play chess. No, I don´t mean the game what the Westerner play but Chinese Chess.

Once I saw a group of men standing on the street and they stared on the floor. I am curious so I was interested to find out what they were looking for... I went near to them and then I saw it. They didn´t look for something but the played. Chinese Chess.

Don't miss the noodles

by Yso about Muslim Quarters

If you're in the Muslim area around lunchtime you'll find it pretty difficut to miss all the street stall?restaurents that sell spicy noodles. All you have to do is point and then sit down, its absolutely declicious Noodles and various veg and spices served steaming hot in a great big bowl, if you want to go light on the chilli you just have to say so!

Also, the cheapest way to eat!

The Ming Walls

by aukjejetty

You will see the walls when you enter the city.
During the Ming dynasty (1368 A.D.-1644 A.D.), Xi'an was refurbished and returned to prominence as a center of politics and trade. The Ming emperors rebuilt the walls, incorporating one corner left over from the Yuan dynasty in their design.
In each brick is carved the brickmaker's name, most worn very faint, but still visible. They were required because the walls builders needed specified precisely what size and weight of brick they needed, and if your product failed inspection once, you made it again; if it failed twice, you were penalized; if you failed three times, you were killed.

The Drum Tower

by Paul2001

The Drum Tower compliements the nearby Bell Tower. Like the Bell Tower it was used to announce the time. Also like the Bell Tower it was originally built in the 14th century. It probably does not receive quite so many visitors as the Bell Tower for the fact that there is little to see inside and no performances.
The Drum Tower is 33 metres high. It is a very colourful with its eaves and flat base decorated with blue green hoppers. There are to floors in the inside of the tower. On the second floor is a "museum" full of furniture which I believed to be actually for sale. The most famous feature of the Drum Tower is the massive drum which you can see in the first picture here. The drum is 1.8 meters tall and 2.83m in diameter. You cannot bang the drum.

War Machines

by solopes

The city wall is a great monument by itself.

Furthermore, the clever idea of spreading on it some recreations of the old war machines enhances the views, and give thes place a sense of natural authenticity.

Of course, we don't know the purpose of some of them, but... they fit well in place!
