Expat resources available?

by cdrum

Hi there, I am an American, and have the opportunity to move to Xi'an this summer (2003) for a full-time job. I have lived in Beijing before, and am familiar with the expat "scene" there. I am wondering if people can comment on the expat "scene" in Xi'an, if there is one. Thanks!

Chris

Hey Chris,
You posted your note 6 months ago, I hope you still check here now that you are in Xi'an.
My girlfriend and I have been here since March and have failed to find any sort of expat community at all. It's been quite depressing considering that after our recent two month holiday in China we found them easy to find in most cities in China. It's refreshing to be able to just sit down with a beer and chat at normal speed especially since we are living in China without speaking the language.
If you found anything please let us know. We saw your other reply but find it a little too cryptic to reply to this mysterious unknown.
Hope you've enjoyed it here so far.

Travel Tips for Xi'an

Noisy bar

by explorer001 about 1 + 1 Bar

Most guidebooks recommended this place, but I personally shun it. Crowded and quite rowdy (late night), it plays house music + chinese rock/disco songs.

Drinks are not cheap - same beer costs me RMB 25 here. No dress code.

Your duration in Xi'an

by wendyqiuwen

To visit the Terra Cotta Warriors, you need 4 hours at least because you need to spend at leat 1 hour on the way. Leave 3 hours for visiting. There's no certain time when they are not very crowded. My suggestion is gettiong up early and head to the Terra Cotta Army. Don't worry about the Shaaxi History Museum, there are english descriptions. Besides the Terra Cotta Warriors and the Shaanxi History Musuem, you can pay a visit to the Great Mosque and the moslim area. You can have a thorough understanding on the Chinese Moslims' daily life after visiting the Great Mosque and the Moslim area. I mean if you are interested in it. There are also many places worthy of visiting. Need more information, send me a email through: info@travelchinaspring.com. I will try my best to give you more information you want to know.

Large Wild Goose Pagoda

by mikelisaanna

The Large Wild Goose Pagoda is a well-preserved pagoda from the Tang Dynasty that is over 200 feet tall. The pagoda was originally built as a five-story pagoda in the 7th century, with additional height and stories added in the 9th century. The top few stories of the pagoda fell of in a 16th century earthquake, leaving it at its current size. As a result of soil settling, the pagoda leans slightly to one side, which you can see from a distance.

The pagoda is part of a temple complex, the Da Ci'en Temple. You can climb to the top of the pagoda for a good view of Xi'an. Some of the other buildings in the temple complex are open to tourists. One included beautiful jade murals of Buddhist imagery, while another featured a large Buddha sculpture.

The Awakening

by muddybok

For more than 2000 years the Xi'an terracotta warriors silently guarded the tomb of Qin Shihuang, first Emperor of China. This is Qin Shihuang’s idea of guarding him and his treasures when he must face the greatest test in life, death.

Of course not just the Terracotta Army was buried here; in fact almost 782,000 of workers working for the project were buried here so that no secrets of the tomb could be revealed. The first man that he goes after must be the architects of the tomb.

Good thing I’m only a systems architect!!

A sense of strenght

by solopes

It's fundamental to climb the city wall, and walk on it.

It's easy to feel its importance in the defense of the city, and the challenge it would mean to those who tried to cross it with their primitive resources.

Though the balloons and some decoration are recent (I don't know if matching any tradition), it's remarkable the aesthetics they add to a military construction
