by Jannoo

Hi, wanted to know if late Feb till early March is a good timing to visit Xian. Anohter question is are we allow to take picture inside the Terra Cotta Army "museum"?

Feb and March is OK if you don't mind cold weather. It's not snowing but it's not sunny either and a bit nippy. Bring warm clothes.

Yes you can take pictures of the Terra Cotta warriors to your heart's content

It's a good time to visit as not too many tourists but wrap up. Thermals warm coat gloves scarf.........etc

Officially you can't take flash photos as it is supposed to be damaging to the artifacts. When I was there The Japanease and Korean tourist were pretty snap happy.

It's ok, but be prepared for less-than-stellar weather conditions, black slush on streets and many people... it's the Spring Festival period for 2007!
Officially prohibited to take photos but everyone does so anyway, so snap away.

Travel Tips for Xi'an

What to take!

by geekgrrl

If you are flying within China, there is a weight restriction of 20 kilos per person for checked luggage. You can carry up to 150 kilos, but you will be charged extra (not a lot) for the overage. Kleenex and anti-bacterial wipes. For restroom use. A must take! Our family doctor also gave us Rx's for Lomotil and Cipro in case we contracted a stomach bug. We never did, but it was comforting to have along. He also recommended that we buy Pepto Bismol tablets and take one every morning and every evening as a preventative measure. Remember to take enough memory cards for your digital camera. I ended up taking over 1000 photos in 18 days!

Dining Overview

Xi'an cuisine has a good, hearty style that should never let you leave the table hungry. Noodles and dumplings are the staples of the local food and these are almost always filling and warming.

Yangrou Paomo is a tasty Xi'an specialty that consists of a mutton soup served with wheat flour flat bread. The hard bread is broken up and added to the soup. Then the mixture is eaten along with pickled garlic cloves. It makes for a hearty, filling meal that is not very expensive. This Xi'an specialty can be found at several restaurants that have become famous for their delicious Yangrou paomo, as well as a small "mom and pop" restauarants throughout Xi'an. Xiguan Beef and Lamb Paomo Restaurant, Tongshengxiang Beef and Lamb Paomo Restaurant, and Chunfasheng Paomo Restaurant are all good places to go for this tasty meal.

Yet another interesting culinary experience to be had in Xi'an is the Xi'an Dumpling Feast. This concept, introduced in 1984 by the Xi'an Dumpling Feast Restaurant on Jiefang Road, offers up to 108 different kinds of Chinese dumpling (Jiaozi). Also worth trying are the Defachang Restaurant and the Baiyunzhang Northwest Style Snack Restaurant.

Some other Xi'an snacks and special dishes include: Sour Soup Dumplings and Guantang Steamed Baozi.

If you are looking for good western food in Xi'an, your choices are unfortunately less numerous. There are lots of places to get western food off Dongdajie. Also, on the northwestern outskirts of the city near the Flats of Renmin Hotel on Fenghe Lu, there are two restaurants that offer great western food for reasonable prices. They are Dad's Home Cooking and Mum's Home Cooking respectively. Although the names might imply that they are of the same ownership, they are not. They are both great places to meet people and hear a story or two.

The Terracotta Warriors - 2.

by K.Knight

When a local official heard of the discovery, he informed the Government.

The Government sent a team to look at the relics, and because they could not date them, reminded the farmers of the national policy on archaeology and quickly confiscated all of the pottery fragments.

Later testing showed that the fragments were over 2,000 years old and the husband of a worker on the project, a reporter, wrote an article for a national newspaper announcing the discovery of the “Terracotta Warriors and their horses” near the tomb of the first emperor!

And so it began…..tourism!

The Large Wild Goose Pagoda

by josephva

The Temple was built by Emperor Tang Gaozong to honor his mother, Empress Wende. The Temple is also said to have been built to house and protect Buddhist scriptures collected in India by the Chinese monk, Xuan Zang.

Really not that interesting

by ahoerner

This neolithic village is an open air museum with remainings of the neolithic age.

Unfortunately the most interesting part of the park is in renovation, so you have only the option to see the exhibition rooms with some pottery, paitings, some of the history of the place and some technical details on the excavations and archology work.
