Can you hike Huashan in late April?

by brendancf

I am going to be in Beijing an late April and would like to go to Huashan and hike up it. Is this an OK time to go? Will the weather be OK then and safe to hike the mountain?

Yes. Not entirely sure what you mean by "hike", but you'll be allowed on the mountain. Can't imagine how you plan to get up if you don't take the beaten path though.

You look like a tough hiker. Hope that you enjoy the hike to Huashan. We were toasted (only went small part, and taking the cable cars up and down)in a hot September, almost 40C. You will need to have a pair of gloves (the locals will sell you there if you arrive without), as you will definitely need to use all fours! A popular hike for Chinese is start at the mid-night, get to the top and see the sunrise, then come down. I was told the path is lit at the night for this.

Safe code is totally DIFFERENT from that in the States. You are on your own (means, take risk). Here are some photos I took: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/18aef/f7c04/

This link has more scary photos (we were far from there): http://kamleung.com/triplog/0109xian/xian_05.htm

Be well prepared! If you really enjoy that kind of mountain, have a great time, otherwise I highly recommend Huangshan, the so-called yellow mountain for hiking: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/18aef/f0686/6/

Shouldn’t be a problem. Although you might want to rent a coat at night, they have them on the mountain so you don’t have to bring your own.

Travel Tips for Xi'an

When you're in Xi'an, you must...

by Deathray

When you're in Xi'an, you must go to Hua-shan, which is a breathtakingly impressive mountain range just outside of city. You can start climbing the mountain at around midnight. It well take you about 5 hours to get to the apex, just in time for the sunrise. At several thousand feet above sea level and sharp cliffs on all sides, sunrise on top of Hua-shan beats sunrise on a beach any day of the week !!

Mongol pot

by GUYON about Several restaurants in XIAN

The Mongol Pot.
You choose your meat (do not hesitate to take a lot, it reduces when cooking), your vegetables and the sauces.
You give the whole plate to the cook who put your mixture on the hotplate. The result is delicious.
An advice, do not eat the pork raw : it must be coocked

Old Xian Landmark

by SLLiew

This majestic wall tower must be a sight to behold when caravans of camels and horses finally reach Xian, the Tang capital of China after crossing the Gobi Desert and Central Asia.

There is a sizeable Muslim population in Xian and for those who are Muslim tourist, plenty of Muslim restaurants to choose from.

A great view of the city from the tower rampart.

Impressive indeed

by Museeuw

This tip is not the place to give an explanation about what this is. You can find information on that anywhere. I'll just give a couple of impressions and some pictures.
- Around the entrance it's the typical chaos, with people trying to sell all kinds of things. Once you get passed the entrance however, it's peaceful and quiet (except from the other tourists of course). From the entrance of the area to the entrance of the buildings is about a one kilometer walk on a nice path.
- Inside it's impressive indeed, even after I had seen lots of pictures before I came here.
- In one of the buildings there's a movie about how the army was built and destroyed. Interesting.
- One thing I didn't understand. Lots of people wanted to meet one of the farmers who discovered the statues, and have a picture with him. Don't know why actually.

Historiy Museum of Shaanxi

by socrates_07

It's a large-scale modern State-class museum, situated at the western side of the "Wild Goose Pagoda" in Xian City. It covers an area of about 70,000 square meters, the architectural area of which is 55,000 odd square meters. It was completed on June 20, 1991 and open to the public.

There are over 3000 pieces of cultural relics on display; they are the cream of cultural relics selected from among the hundreds of thousands of cultural relics, the majority of which are worldly treasures. Not only for me this museum is one of the best in China.
