Xi'an to Urumqi by train - need a reservation?
by JFuller317
I am planning to travel from Beijing to Europe by train, and one of the legs of the trip will be from Xi'an to Urumqi. I am wondering if I will need to reserve this ticket ahead of time. I plan on spending at least two or three days in Xi'an in order to see the Terra Cotta warriors and other sights, so I could just buy the ticket on the first day if that will be sufficient time in advance.

No, definitely not enough time. Also note that although there might be a number of trains doing this route, only one originates in Xi'an. This means that there would be quite some difficulties getting sleeper tickets.

Train tickets usually go on sale 10 days in advance for major cities, not 5 days in advance.
Travel Tips for Xi'an
For sure I'll go to the Muslim...
by drozi
For sure I'll go to the Muslim resident area, the food there is so nice. Although Xi'an, or even the whole Shan'xi provice is rather dirty ( sorry, but it's true),I like this city very much, not only because of lots of event in the early Chinese history were happened there.
I miss the food there very much. Last year September, just after I resigned from the company, the first thing I did was: went to Xi'an for food. The question I asked myself at those days was 'why people can only eat three times a day'.
Airport Shuttle Bus
by ahoerner
When you arrive in Xi'an you may have three options:
1) take a taxi
2) take a shuttle bus, which ticket is sold on the counters located on the arrival hall in the airport
3) walk out of the arrival hall and take the small shuttle buses parked just outside.
I suggest option #3. Fare is RMB25 (around $3) and you get safely to the Bell Tower in less than one hour. And you still have money to have a nice dinner, if you want.
The number one thing to see in Xi'an-the City Wall
by albaaust
Thoroughly recommend that you walk along this wall and enjoy the ambience and views.
The present wall was built over remains of earlier walls built from 582AD and added to through time. It was fully rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty. It is regarded as one of the most complete ancient fortifications in China today at almost 14 km in length 15 metres wide at the top. Its fortifications include a moat, hanging bridge, gate towers and turrets.
We walked along lots of walls during our stay in China -Xi'an's was by far the largest and most impressive in terms of its colour (red lanterns), atmosphere and size!!
To get the Southern Gate we simply walked down South Street (Nanda Jie). The entry fee is 40 Yuan and for 60 Yuan you can hire a rickshaw for a very bumpy thirty minute ride along part of the wall.
Big Goose and Little Goose
by SLLiew
I climbed both Pagodas for the heck of it, to get a panoramic view and donate to the local economy with the reasonable admission fees.
Big Goose pagoda is more majestic as the name suggest was build during the Tang Dynasty to house the Buddhist scriptures brought back travelling monk Xuan Zhang, immortalized by the Chinese legend of "Monkey Goes West".
Interesting shopping-HistoricPrecinct
by albaaust
The Historical Precinct near Wolong Temple area along Wenchangmen from the south gate is an interesting place to wander through with its dark alleyways, authentic shops and overhanging adjoining corridors.
