Nightlife begins....
by explorer001 about Red Club
This place is on the same block (or was it the next block?) as Xian City hotel (walking towards south). Decorated mostly in red, this place is nice to start the night, having a few drinks with friends while enjoying the dice games. You can even challenge the bar tenders to the game (your pay for the drinks of course!).
They have a security gate installed at the entrance, but apparently the guards don't really stop you even though the gates beeped (I've got my mobile in my pocket).
Music is Chinese Pop, with some english tunes thrown in at intervals.
Drinks are reasonably priced, certainly not the cheapest in town (Budweiser - RMB 10 - Nov 06) I didn't see anyone wearing short pants (it was winter!) :-)
Just dress however you like.

Hotel/Lodging Suggestions
by Gorkhali
Dear All: Any suggestions on decent lodging options for the cities below. We are planing on spending $30-$50/night. Ideally it will be close to city/public transportation with attractions or things to do within walking distance.
Beijing: 4-6 days
Xi'an: 1.5-3 days
3 Gorges Dam: under 1 day
Huangshan: 2-3 days
Suzhou: 1-2 days
Shanghai: 2-4 days

When in Beijing I usually stay at Zhong An hotel. That's a short walk from the railway station. About 220 RMB a night
In Xian I stayed at Xian City hotel. very close to the Bell Tower, on South St. Less than 200 per night.
Can't remember where I stayed in Shanghai, and I've never been to the other places.
Look at english.ctrip.com for hotel advice

Try the Bell Hotel Xian, Metropole (it is a bit tired but great location) Shanghai.

Stayed at the Lishi Hotel, No.18 Beijing Lishi Lane, Dong Si Nan Street, Dong Cheng District, Beijing. Within walking distance of many tourist attractions, including Forbidden City. Not luxury, but has all creature comforts and best of all - is situated in a narrow hutong. Would definitely stay there again.

I presume you're talking in USD, per room?
Beijing: Citytel Inn, Tang Yue Hotel
Xi'an: Shaanxi Wenyuan Hotel, HQ Hostel, Bell Tower IYH
Huangshan city (Tunxi): Old Street Hotel, HiGood Inn
Suzhou: HomeInn (Guanqian Jie outlet)
Shanghai: Shangfu Holiday Hotel, Ambassador Hotel, Paramount Hotel, Lijing Hotel, East Asia Hotel
You won't be able to find a room in the summit area of Huangshan with that budget. Dorm bed, yes.
