Fukai Hotel, Xian
The Fukai hotel is a 3-star hotel, clean and comfortable, but a 20 minute walk to the drum tower and muslim quarters. We made our reservations via www.hotelguidechina.com and paid $57/night for a standard room. The only complaint iwe had was the slight smell of smoke in the room and the weak water pressure in the showers. There is one restaurant in the hotel, but we did not care for the food. The breakfast buffet was 20 RMB but the food was plain and the selection limited. We did not find many appealing restaurants to go to nearby so we spent a good portion of our time walking to the drum tower area where they have a McDonalds and a nice famous Dumpling Restaurant nearby. Although our stay was comfortable, in hindsight we should have stayed at the Bell Tower Hotel which is a much better location. Also, beware of taking a taxi to the airport or train station, called by the doorman. They will try to charge you twice the cost. We paid the taxi approx. 8 RMB from the train station to the hotel. Instead, find your own taxi by walking a few steps to the street.

Central, cheap and comfortable
I booked on C-Trip for a signifigant discount and was pleased. The beds were on the firm side, but comfortable. The rooms were very clean and modern.
Breakfast can be included if arranged in advance.
For those of you who cannot unplug from the world for a few days, there was no english TV stations, i.e. no CNN or BBC (at least when I stayed there). But there is broadband connection in the rooms.
Unique Quality: 10 minute walk from Bell Tower, Drum Tower and Muslim Quarter

FuKai hotel
It was newly built when I visited Xi'an, so rooms were very clean. It is next to the government building or police station (forgot which one), so basically that area is very safe to hang around even at night. The restaruant on the first floor serve very great food at pretty cheap price.
Unique Quality: I have to say the bathroom design is very unique here. It is all glass wall. If you are sharing room with a friend, don't forget to ask him/her to close eyes when u shower ;-)
