Xi An Foreign Language University.
www.xflu.net (in Chinese)

Use 'google.com' to search, you should find lot info. Here is one site:
http://campus.fortunecity.com/princeton/321/hxy01.html

Yes, it will snow in the winter.

Cost of living definitely is lower than in Beijing/Shanghai, but others may be able to help you with the apartment rent info.

Have a good time there.

Travel Tips for Xi'an

To Buy Or Not to Buy

by walterwu

For those of you going between Beijing and Xi'an, the prices in Xi'an is definitely better than what you could get in Beijing.

Again, remember to bargain. Start at very low price. Don't forget that labour cost for producing the goods in China is very very low. You would be surprised.

Interesting to walk around

by piglet44

We went to see the Mosque ,which did not look anything like a Middle Eastern style mosque, and then we walked around the little streets of the quarter, where you see people wearing Muslim style clothes, and selling Muslim street food. It was about the dirtiest place we went in China, and we did not dare eat anything there. But it was colourful, and we were especially interested in the fact that every tree seemed to have a little bird cage hanging on it,and the little song birds could be heard piping away.

City Walls

by Willettsworld

The fortifications of Xi'an represent one of the oldest and best preserved Chinese city walls. Construction of the first city wall began in 194 BC and took just four years to build. That wall measured 25.7 km in length and 12-16 m in thickness at the base. The area within the wall was around 36 sq km. The current existing wall was started in the Ming Dynasty in 1370. It encircles a much smaller city of 12 sq km and measures 11.9 km in circumference, 12 m in height, and 15-18 m in thickness at the base. The wall itself is surrounded by a moat.

Every 120 meters, there is a rampart which extends out from the main wall. All together, there are 98 ramparts on the wall, which were built to defend against the enemy climbing up the wall. Each rampart has a sentry building, in which the soldiers could protect the entire wall without exposing themselves to the enemy. The distance between every two ramparts is just within the range of an arrow shot from either side, so that they could shoot the enemy, who wanted to attack the city, from either the side. On the outer side of the city wall, there are 5948 crenulations, namely battlements. The soldiers can outlook and shoot at the enemy. On the inner side, parapets were built to protect the soldiers from falling off.

Cheap way of seeing musical performance

by albaaust

Watch a performance of traditional music performers in the Bell Tower.
Try and time your visit to the Bell Tower when there is a "free" traditional musical performance. (I have included a photo of the performance times)The performance lasts about half an hour and you get a "feel" for the music at the time especially the use of bells.

The Bell Tower closes at 5.30pm during the low season.

The Bell tower marks the center of Xi'an where North street, East street, South street and West street meet. The original Bell Tower built by the Ming was rebuilt here by the Qing in the 18th century and was heavily restored a decade ago.
