TERRACOTA WARRIORS
This is now the main attration in Xian. Under a covered warehouse you can see the excavations (they are still unearthing statues) of the Qin King terracota warriors. You can only walk around the upper corridor and see it from some five meters above (unless you are Clinton or so). There is an interesting antiquities & souvenirs market outside the main building, but if you are in a tour, they won't let you much time to see it, so hurry up or negociate with the tour guide.

Terracotta Warriors Museum

These tombs were created between 211 - 206 BC by Qin Shi Huang. It took 11 years to finish. About 4 years about Qin was buried and the tombs sealed, they were set on fire and many of the figures were smashed. One can still see the ash of the fire. There are 4 pits (3 are open), a museum, a circle vision movie showing the life of Qin and the building of the tombs, and a Friendship Restaurant on the grounds.
Muslim Quarter and Market
by Green_Frog
Tucked behind the Drum Tower (I think it was). The area is well worth a visit and we again did this in the evening with the Market offering everything chinese and muslim. Funny little streets with a hive of activity - carts being pulled, bicyles being ridden, people racing along, tourists shopping, kids playing - good place to visit. We bought a few souvenirs here and a few Cloisonne Xmas Decorations which I thoroughly enjoyed seeing on my tree this Christmas.
Shaanxi History Museum.
by albaaust
The building itself is modelled on Tang Dynasty style pavilions and covers two floors and contains exhibits of artefacts from tombs related to pre-history, Tang and Qing Dynasty. Most of the artefacts are cultural, archaeological, some pottery, mirrors and some weapons. Unfortunately, we found the displays a little disappointing as few of the exhibits were put into their historical context with only a vague reference to burial mounds.
You cannot take baggage into the museum (there is a storage facility), photography OK but no flash allowed.
I have included a scanned copy of the card with the Chinese characters for the museum given to us by the hotel.
Cost of entry 35 Yuan each.
Open every day. Summer 8.00am to 17.30pm. Winter 9.00am -16.30pm.
